Premiership Title Contenders

The Premiership this season title race shows that Chelsea will the team to beat this season. Forces such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City have some catching up to do in terms of squad options, tactical schemes or experience within the club. Tottenham don’t seem to be strong enough to challenge for a Champions League run and a good effort in the Premiership while Liverpool are still trying to find themselves from the crumble of mismanagement on and off the pitch that have been within the club for several seasons (if not decades).
The first eight rounds of the Premiership, Chelsea have made an almost impeccable campaign, losing only once to the Nouveau Riche Manchester City. The millions spent by Roman Abramovich by making a strong squad, that now possesses the experience and the baggage to be able to conquer both the Premiership and the Champions League (with possibly only Inter Milan, Barcelona or Real Madrid being able to spoil the party). Carlo Ancelotti has turned Chelsea into a counter attacking machine that seems to be ready to ignite at any minute. They have a very strong defense, even with Ricardo Carvalho leaving, while Ivanovic and Alex taking turns in partnering with club symbol captain John Terry. Chelsea have been most of the season without Frank Lampard, who has been sidelined though injury, and despite this absence it has not failed to be a devastating force to opposing teams. The addition to Ramires in the squad was very good, giving more fluidity in the passing at midfield when he comes on. Also, Malouda has been astonishing this season, having scored 7 goals, while Didier Drogba has been deadly as usual. They are a force to be stopped this season and the team to beat.
Manchester United are as usual coming to a slow start of the season. They have dropped silly points and Fulham away, Everton at Goodison Park and at West Brom at home. The Wayne Rooney transfer episode also demonstrated a not so united dressing room, with the young talent exposing his inner perspective on his team mates. He does have a reason, while he does not see the club replacing the exits of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlitos Tevez with equal talent. With the injury of Antonio Valencia for the rest of the season and the aging of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, Alex Ferguson seems to lack the same fire power that teams like Chelsea or rivals Manchester City possess within there squads. Luckily, the Rooney saga has meant that Alex Ferguson will have 100 Million pounds to spend in cherry picked players such as Bastian Schweisteiger (Bayern Munchen), Wesley Sneijder (Inter Milan) and Edin Dzeko (Wolfsburg) among others. The question that all we soccer fans want to ask: Will we be able to see Ferguson build is 4th great team? Hopefully we will have a positive answer before he retires!
Across the city in Eastlands, Manchester City may have all the money in the world, but they lack a championship aura. That is understandable after all the signings they made over the summer. It takes time to get all new players in the same tone at the team. Furthermore, the club lacks experience in high profile games, as evidenced on Sunday when they went down 3v0 at home to Arsenal. Also, Roberto Mancini plays defensive tactics with the man power that he has. In my opinion, he should listen more to Carlitos Tevez who is asking a more attacking team. He could place Adebayor up front together with Tevez and drop Gareth Barry, Nigel de Jong or Yaya Toure and play a higher field pressure on opposing teams. However that is not very Italian and I doubt he will concede to the pressure of his captain. Soccer fans would thank him for that.
Arsenal, Tottenham & Liverpool were the other top teams tipped to finish in the top 4 position. Arsenals have not won a trophy in over 5 years. The team plays a very sexy soccer; however it lacks a goalkeeper and a ball winner in midfield. Furthermore, it lacks a reference in attack to score the goals week in and week out. Spurs give a suggestion that it will be a burden to play the Champions League and maintain a 4th place run at the same time. The addition of Van der Vaart to the team gave them a pedigree, however they need to be more generous in there fans hearts. And finally Liverpool has been the biggest upset of the season. It is sad to see a club of such a stature to be in that situation. Roy Hodgson seems overwhelmed with the task of rebuilding the club. The club needs many new players and Hodgson signings have not worked out at the moment. A new manager would be a good solution, and the signings of a defender, a left back, playmaker and a partner for Torres would be the absolute priority for the team. Despite being at the relegation zone, with a couple of wins the team can climb many places in the standings. Signings are key for that to happen!
All in all, it is Chelsea’s title to lose this season. Manchester City have to gain momentum with the squad, Man Utd need new additions to the team with fresh blood. Arsenal need to get back the winning mentality they had when the likes of Henry and Vieira played for them. While Liverpool need to rebuild from scratch a team that will play the way they did in the past, passing the ball around, controlling opponents and be happy with winning (not drawing with minnow teams). Spurs need to keep the momentum and build on the good signings of Harry Rednapp. Chelsea have the players, the manager, experience and the depth in tactics and squad to win the Premiership and the Champions League this season.
