In a wet and windy day in Seattle on Sunday the Seattle Seahawks came out victorious in an ugly 22 – 10 victory over the Arizona Cardinals with the help Orlindo Mare’s 5 FG’s, and the Cardinals 5 turnovers. Only time will tell how big this game actually was, but with the victory the Seahawks improve to 4 – 2 and have sole possession of first place in the NFC West, and another important fact is that everyone else in the division lost.
The turning point in this game came midway through the second quarter when QB Matt Hasselback threw a 2 yard pass where only well covered 6-5 receiver Mike Williams could catch it. The drive was set up when the cardinals return man receiver Andre Roberts fumbled a punt by Seahawks Punter Jon Ryan which was later recovered by Seahawks cornerback Roy Lewis at the Arizona 2 yard line.
However the play of the game came early in the 3rd the seahawks Orlindo Mare just kicked a 31 yard field goal to make it 13 – 0. On the ensuing kick off cardinals return man running back Jason Wright fumbled the ball and Sehawks cornerback Kennard Cox recovered the ball at the Arizona 16 yard line. After a three and out and two straight holding penalties Orlindo Mare made another field goal this one being a 51 yarder to make it 16 – 0.
Cardinals Rookie QB Max Hall was extremely ineffective in his first road start going 4 for 16 and a interception. He left the field in the third quarter after taking a hit by Seahawks defensive end Chris Clemons. Backup Derek Anderson then drove the Cardinals down the field on their next drive for their only touchdown, he finished the game 8 for 17 for 96 yards.
The Cardinals made things difficult for Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck sacking him 5 times. Most of that to do with the loss rookie tackle Russell Okung in the first quarter with an ankle sprain. Hasselbeck finished the game 20 for 38 for 192 yards and a touchdown, most of his completions were to WR Mike Williams who had another big game having 11 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown.
Overall this an ugly victory by the Seahawks but a win is a win. However you simply can’t keep kicking field goals in those situations because a good team will find ways to win these games. With the win the Seahawks improve to 4 – 2 and travel to Oakland next Sunday to face the 3 – 4 Raiders. With the loss the Cardinals fall to 3 – 3 and host the 4 – 2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday.
