2010-2011 Los Angeles Clippers Preview Shocker!

Here we are, the Clippers opening game. And the questions this year for Clipper fans are the same as any other year:

  1. Will the team make it through the season healthy?
  2. If they are healthy, will they eek into the playoffs?

Staying healthy is always the primary concern for the perennially injury ridden Clippers. The team has never been able to pull it together for consecutive seasons and the hopes of the woeful Clipper fans out there is that this is the start of something good happening.

After being taken with the 1st pick of the 2009 NBA draft, Oklahoma standout Blake Griffin makes his NBA debut tonight. Like many young and talented Clippers before him, Griffin got injured and actually did not play a single game last season making him eligible for the NBA Rookie of the Year award at the end of the 2010-2011 season.

The Clipper frontcourt will be formidable with Chris Kaman returning again. Kaman is a solid performer and strong worker who will no doubt be locked in for a season averaging at least 15 and 9.

The problem with the Clippers is their backcourt. This league is driven by guard play and Baron Davis, now entering his 12th NBA season at the age of 31, has to do better than shooting 37% from the floor if the Clippers plan on going anywhere this year. And Eric Gordon needs to show that he can be a consistent pro by attempting to duplicate his third consecutive season of averaging 16 points a night.

Perhaps the biggest hole with the Clippers revamped roster, only six players that played for the ’09-’10 squad return, is the bench. Other than Randy Foye and Rasual Butler, there really isn’t anyone on this bench that the Clippers can count on to make a consistent contribution. This is going to be a real concern upfront as Brian Cook is not a pure power forward, while DeAndre Jordan and Jarron Collins are just guys. Look for Kaman and Griffin to log a lot minutes this year.

As for a prediction for the season, I will believe the Clippers made it through a season healthy when I see it.

Record prediction: 35-47

Really no shock here. Clippers miss the playoffs again. I just put “shocker’ in there to see if it would get you to click. It did. Yea me!
