A hot start out of the gate for the Dallas Stars and all is well. So far. Kinda. The Stars opened up a 5-1 record in the first six games, though have dropped the last two and now sit at 5-3. What’s odd about that is they’ve only outshot their opponents in three of the eight games, and have lost two of those three. That means they’re 4-1 when being outshot and 1-2 when outshooting their opponent. Should Marc Crawford be teaching the boys to shoot less ?
Obviously not. But what do the numbers mean ? Well nothing, really. It’s all about capitalizing when the oppurtunity arises. Wether you get thirty five cahnces, or just twenty chances, make as many count as you can. Aswell as creating high percentage chances rather than low ones. I could fire thirty five pucks at the net from the blueline, or even the top of the circle, and I may not score on any. Whereas if I was fed one-timers in the slot, I’d have a better chance. I know it’s not rocket science, but sometimes the numbers don’t always tell the whole story.
So far, for the most part, the Stars have been getting in the right spots and putting the puck in the exact place it needs to go to find the back of the net. They’ve been capitlizing. Have they been outplaying their opponents ? I wouldn’t say so. I don’t know if anyone would. I think they still need to learn how to do that as a unit. The same ol defensive problems seem to be creeping up at times and over an 82 game schedule, unless that gets fixed, will prove to be costly as far as the Stars hopes of returning to the playoffs.
