Someone Has to Win

CMU and Bowling Green have both lost 5 games in a row, CMU is 2-6, 1-4 in conference, while Bowling Green is 1-7, 0-4 in conference. Both teams need a win badly when they meet at 3:30 in Mt Pleasant on Saturday, and the good news is, one of these teams has to win this game. For CMU it is a must win. They have lost two home games in a row, more games then they lost at home the last two years combined, and a 5 game loosing streak has a lot of the Chippewa faithful questioning this team and their new head coach Dan Enos. There is no question that Coach Enos is a great recruiter, just look at how MSU is doing this year, he was one of their main recruiters, and he seems to be a very nice guy, but can he be a good head coach is yet to be seen. I am still behind him, but a 3rd bad effort at home in a row, and a 6th loss overall would have me second guessing that.
It was clear CMU was going to take a step back. After last years 12-2 record, and all the players they lost, a few of which is in the NFL right now, but 2-6 is not what anyone thought would happen, since there is still enough talent on this team to at least compete in the MAC. CMU has had 16 players make thier first career start this year, but that is no excuss for the way they have come out and play at home the last two weeks.
Senior LB Nick Bellore continues to be a tackling machine and play as hard as he can, as he leads all current college players with 445 career tackles, but the defense as a whole as played well for most of the game but have made huge mistakes at important times and giving up a lot of big plays.
QB Ryan Radcliff isn’t making anyone forget about Dan Lefevour and though he does have a strong arm he seems to have some problem with telling colors of jerseys because he has thrown a lot of interceptions. CMU has won two games in a row against Bowling Green, and they are still 18-2 in their last 20 games against the MAC East, so some numbers are still on their side, but loosing five games in a row, including two home games in a row, both to teams they were favored by double digits over makes this a game the Chippewas’ have to have.
For BG they are lead by RB Willie Geter, who has 516 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns, and Jordan Hopgood, who has only 153 yards on the year, but has scored 5 touchdowns. Bowling Green has used two QB this season, Matt Schilz has played in 6 games and thrown 1,346 yards and 5 touchdowns, while Aaron Pankratz has played in 5 games, and thrown for 520 yards and four touchdowns. WR Kamar Jorden is the leading receiver with 67 catches for 733 yards and 3 touchdowns on the year.
This is CMU’s first of two last home games in a row to end the year, with the last being Friday November 5th against rival Western Michigan, so something positive needs to come out of this game, to get the players, and fans, ready for that Western game. It has been a very disappointing season in Mt Pleasant, and truthfully even if this team somehow won their last four games to finish at 6-6 it still would be. But a loss on Saturday would hurt a whole lot more then a win would help, and considering Bowling Green has not won a MAC game yet, and is 1-7 overall, this is a game CMU needs to win. In the last two home games they have not gotten off to good starts, that needs to change on Saturday. CMU needs to score first, and need to score often. I think there is enough seniors on this team that will get the rest of the team ready and CMU will win this game 28-17.
