Can a home game away from home save the 49ers season?

Greetings from jolly old England.  I’m not really there, but the 49ers are as they prepare for their week 8 contest against the Denver Bronco’s.

Alex Smith had the opportunity to experience England’s healthcare system when he spent Monday in the hospital having his left shoulder checked out.  Diagnosis – separated left shoulder.  Smith will not be starting.  The starting job goes to Smith, Troy Smith.

I think it is a good move to start the former Heisman Trophy winner.  Smith, who was acquired in September, has only 2 career starts and has not done too much during his 4 years in the league and is just starting to get use to the 49ers offensive play book.  But at this point in the season it’s a good idea to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.

He has told reporters that he is working hard to learn the playbook and is ready for his chance to start.  He also said that he will not focus all of his attention on former Buckeye team mate Ted Ginn Jr.  While it is a good idea focus all ones attention on one receiver, it would be a smart move to have Ginn on the field a little more then usual.  A familiar face may help settle Troy Smith.

His running ability will add another dimension to the offense, and should be helpful against the shell shocked Bronco’s, who allowed for over 320 rushing yards against the Raiders in week 7.

It is unfortunate that this year’s international game instalment will feature two underperforming teams.  But hopefully the change of scenery, even for the week, will do the 49ers some good.  They are at a cross roads in their season.  Do they try to right the ship and hope for a late season burst, or do they play so they don’t lose a top 10 draft pick in April?  Maybe they can discuss that over a plate of Fish n’ Chips and a pint.
