YPSILANTI, Mich. — GAME NOTES 10-30-2010

The Series

After three consecutive road games Eastern Michigan University finally can enjoy some home cooking and feel comfortable at cozy Rynearson Stadium against the rival the University of Toledo.

This will be the 38th meeting between the two squads, the Rockets hold a 26-11 edge against the Eagles.

Eastern Michigan last victory against Toledo occurred Oct. 21, 2006 when Eastern Michigan nipped the Rockets 17-14

Watching the Game

Toledo enters the game undefeated in the Mid-American Conference – West Division and the Rockets are tied with Northern Illinois University at the top of the division.

The Rockets defense rank second in the nation with 24 turnovers forced and tied for second with 14 interceptions.

Eastern Michigan University will need to protect the ball and control the clock, the offense will need to be the best defense for the Eagles.

The Rockets are eighth in the league in total offense averaging 318 yards a game and the defense is ranked sixth in conference allowing 318 yards. Toledo have committed 16 turnovers, 13 fumbles by the rockets and have lost seven to the opposition.

The Eagles 18 game losing streak is over with the 41-38 victory against Ball State University Oct. 16 but the Eagles found the losing column against the University of Virginia 48-21 in Charlottesville, Va.

“There is a lot of things we need to improve. We have to find ways to not punish ourselves with penalties and to start faster,” University of Toledo football coach Tim Beckman said while assessing his team. “Now we to get our selves ready for Eastern Michigan .”

Eastern Michigan Players to Watch

Offensive Line – This entire group will need to be able to push the line of scrimmage ahead and get the offense in manageable situations with downs and distance. The offensive line is the key to the offense success if the Eagles can keep control of the ball then the Toledo offense will not be on the field.

RB Javonti Greene – His breakout game against Virginia produced 155 yards and two touchdowns, He is another piece in the rotation of tailbacks that will carry the ball in the option style offense that Eastern Michigan football coach Ron English employees

Defensive Line – As important as the play of the offensive line play the defensive line will have to be able to match the intensity of the offense. Filling gaps and applying pressure in the Toledo backfield will help the linebackers and the defensive backs coverage in pass play situations.

Toledo Players to Watch

DE Alex Johnson – Returned to the Toledo playing rotation after missing the last four games with a fractured bone near his eye. Johnson had three tackles and credited with a forced fumble in the win against Ball State University

CB Desmond Marrow – The senior cornerback , has missed more than half of his career due to his injury. Marrow missed the entire 2007 season with a hamstring injury. In 2008 he missed five games due a season-ending knee injury. Marrow missed the entire 2009 season as he recovered from off-season knee surgery.

He is returned this season at the first game of the season against the University of Arizona.

QB Austin Dantin – The sophomore Rocket quarterback who just a couple of weeks ago was dealing with serious job security issues, went 14 of 18 for 197 yards and one touchdown in the win against Ball State University.
