Stampeders Send a Message

First off apologies to missing last games blog. Last week both the Stamps and Riders lost so Calgary has clinched the home playoff date for the Western Final, while the Saskatchewan Roughriders will host either the Edmonton Eskimos or BC Lions in the West semi final. One other note.. Congratulations to Nik Lewis who went over 1000 yards receiving. That theme would play out a couple more times on Friday night when the Calgary Stampeders set out to host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at McMahon Stadium with neither team having anything to play for as Hamilton had found out a few minutes earlier that they would host the East Semi Final against the Toronto Argonauts, after the Argos had just lost a wild one to the Montreal Alouettes to end their hopes of a home playoff date. If you didn’t see the finish to that game go to www.cfl.ca and get the highlights of the finish!

So with very little to play for for the Stampeders except to somewhat right the ship after winning only two of their last six, and get momentum going forward into the post season. The Stamps came out flying. After a solid opening drive led to a Rob Maver FG, Dwight Anderson would pick off Hamilton QB Kevin Glenn and return it 86 yards for the major to quickly get the Stamps up 10-0.

After Hamilton blocked a Calgary punt Glenn took advantage and hooked up with Dave Stala on a 7 yard TD pass to cut the lead to three. Stala tried for another youtube celebration but his double roll down the small hill at the back of the end zone was a weak effort.

After that the Stampeders offense took over. Calgary put up 24 points in the second quarter thanks in large part to a pair of Romby Bryant TD receptions to put the Stamps up by 24 at the half. The Stamps then continued on in the third quarter where they had left off, with another Romby Bryant TD reception. Calgary added a couple more TD’s in the 4th quarter including one for RB Jesse Lumsden who had been signed about six weeks earlier.

The only Hamilton offense in the second half came from their talented RB Marcus Thigpen who had a nice 30 yard run for a score, but in the third quarter returned a Maver missed FG 112 yards for a TD. However that was all that was positive for Hamilton as they dropped the game 55-24 to the Stampeders.

Good news for the Stampeders as well with Romby Bryant, and Ken-Yon Rambo both going over the 1000 yard receiving mark. Joffrey Reynolds has rushed for over 1000 yards this year and Henry Burris will likely break 5000 yards passing for the season. If the Stamps play up to their potential they will be a difficult team to beat in the playoffs and likely the Grey Cup favorite.

Up next for the Stampeders is a date in Winnipeg on Fri. Nov. 5th to wrap up the regular season against the Blue Bombers. I would suspect you will see the first team offense for most of this game knowing you have a bye week coming up in preparation for the West Final.

Have a good one!
