6 in a Row

The loosing streak has now reached 6 games overall, and three in a row at home, all to teams that CMU was favored by double digits. Bowling Green came in to Kelly/Shorts Stadium with out a conference win, but by the time they left Mt. Pleasant they had the same amount of conference wins as the defending MAC champion Chippewas’ after a 17-14 win. Bowling Green controlled the first half and was up 10-0 at the break, thanks in part to a dropped pass in the end zone and missed field goal by CMU. In the second half CMU responded nicely and scored on their first drive as Ryan Radcliff threw a touchdown pass to make the score 10-7. The true freshmen Avery Cunningham who has had some problems this year was the hero for a bit as he had a interception return for a touchdown to give the Chippewa’s their first lead of the day at 14-10. Sadly the lead didn’t hold up, as RB Paris Cotton fumbled for the 6th time this year with just over two minutes to go in the game and CMU attempting to run out the clock, which lead BG go down the field and then run the clock down until they scored a touchdown with 21 seconds left to win the game 17-14.
Two home games in a row has seen CMU take a late lead only to lose the lead in the last 30 seconds of the game. Just a heartbreaking way for this team to lose. Coach Enos is trying to keep his guys focused but for a first year coach who has brought in a entire new staff and system with him and is playing a lot of new players it gets harder with each passing loss. CMU is now 2-7 and 1-5 in conference, the team has not won a conference home game yet, and only has one more chance to do so, this coming Friday against arch rival Western Michigan. No matter what happens the rest of the year it will not be what a lot of CMU fans expected but a 5th win in a row over western would help a lot to ease the pressure on Dan Enos and his staff.
WMU has only won in Mt Pleasant twice since 1973 but I am sure they will be smelling blood this year. Loosing four games in a row to CMU does not sit well with them at all, and this year I expect them to bring a lot of people up from Kalamazoo with them to Mt. Pleasant. A short week before the Friday night game doesn’t give the CMU players and coaches any time to feel sorry for themselves after another tough loss. They need to regroup and regroup fast. A win over Western will still give CMU the MAC Michigan trophy and while it wasn’t the trophy that CMU fans have come to expect the last four years, with an entirely new system, and 16 guys making their first career start this year, it at least will be one positive in a season otherwise filled with a lot of negatives. The Senior class deserves to go out a winner in their last home game for all the work they have done for this program, I can only hope they, and the rest of the team find a way to give them what they deserve.
