A different country and new QB equals SF 49er win

I want to know something…..when Troy Smith threw that 38 yard completion to Delanie Walker early in the 4th quarter, were his eyes open, or did he just throw it up there and hope for the best.  Either way, that was the game changing play of the game.

After holding onto a meagre 3 point lead, the Denver Bronco’s scored a quick 10 points.  But then the 49ers turned into a scoring machine, putting up 21 points in just under 9 minutes.

It was obvious that the coaching staff was holding Troy Smith back in the first half.

T. Smith had only 37 yards passing in 9 attempts.  However, in the second quarter he threw for nearly 5 times as many yards and finished the day with 196 yards, 1 TD, no picks and a passer rating of 115.2.  He also had 5 passes for over 20 yards and ran in a touchdown, just to round off his day.

T. Smith’s favourite pass catcher was Delanie Walker, who caught 5 passes for 85 yards.  What surprised me was that Ted Ginn Jr. was only thrown one pass and did not have any receptions.  I thought T. Smith would target Ginn more, since they were teammates at THE Ohio State University.  Frank Gore only had one catch for 7 yards.

However, Frank Gore continued showing he is a prime time running back with 118 yards and 1 touchdown.  This was Gore’s 4th 100+ rushing game of the year, and his 3rd in a row.  He also now has 2 rushing touchdowns on the season….that is a number that needs to get bigger.

The defense stayed in the game and made a key interception to cap off Denver’s final drive.  The 49ers defense kept the Bronco’s running game to 59 yards.  However, they allowed for almost 370 yards passing.  Taylor Mays bit on a play action and allowed the speedy Brandon Lloyd to get behind him for a 71 yard completion.  He did make the tackle on the 1 yard line, but he needs to remember sometimes he is a safety and has to play the pass first.

The defense sacked Orton 5 times, caused 3 fumbles, recovered one and had an interception to finish the game plus 2 on the turnover battle.

The 49ers showed that they can play good football.  They also showed for the first time that they can put the hammer down and finish a game.  They head into week 9 on a bye, but it would have been nice if they did not have the week off to give them a chance to build on this impressive victory.  They will be facing the surprisingly good St. Louis Rams in week 10.  The question to be answered is which Smith will be under centre for that game.  I call a QB controversy…you read it here first.
