Arizona Beats UCLA, Sets Up Showdown With Stanford

Arizona beat UCLA 29-21 on Saturday, in maybe a much closer game than many people thought it was going to be.

However, the Wildcats played well in adversity against a road opponent who at times has shown that they could compete with good teams.

Matt Scott, once again, played remarkably well. He finished 24 of 36 with 319 yards passing, one touchdown and one interception. He also ran for 71 yards on 12 carries. So 390 total yards is a darn good day, if you ask me.

The running backs also performed well for Arizona. Keola Antolin eclipsed the 100-yard mark with 111 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Nic Grigsby had 35 yards rushing, while Greg Nwoko had some carries, finishing with just 25 yards, but also a touchdown.

Offensively, this was the best performance by the Wildcats all season. While 29 points may not seem like a lot, Arizona piled on almost 600 yards on the Bruins, who haven’t been good, but not terrible on defense all season. The defense for Arizona held UCLA to just 299 total yards of offense, but the Bruins did get two big passing plays to keep the ‘Cats on their heels for much of the second half.

Despite the big plays, Arizona played pretty well in my opinion overall, both on offense and on defense. Matt Scott has shown that he and the rest of the team can win without Nick Foles against teams that they should beat. That’s always a great thing to have with your backup quarterback: reliability.

Although it’s not final, Nick Foles may be ready to come back next week against Stanford. You’d think Arizona would let him play if he said he felt fine, since that game could be a pivotal turning point for either team. But if Matt Scott indeed did have to start for the Wildcats, fans have to be confident that he could get the job done if needed.

By Thursday, we should know whether Foles will indeed play next week. Stay tuned, however, because next Saturday is going to be a matchup against two teams with good offenses, good defenses, and two coaches who are trying to break through in the Pac-10.
