One win away from bowl eligibility

With a 29-7 win over VMI, Army has moved within one victory of becoming bowl eligible for the first time since 1996.
Army opened the day’s scoring at Michie Stadium with a 1 yard Trent Steelman touchdown run. The score began a string of 19 unanswered points to start the game for the Black Knights that included a Jared Hassin 38-yard touchdown run, and Alex Carlton field goal, and a safety.
VMI did not answer until Chaz Jones scored on 1 yard touchdown run with 4:18 left in the third quarter.
The teams headed into the final quarter with Army up 19-7. Alex Carlton’s second field goal of the day extended the lead to 22-7. Army sealed the deal when Donovan Travis intercepted an Eric Kordenbrock pass. Travis returned the interception 37 yards before pitching the ball to Jordan Trimble, who took it the rest of the way for a touchdown and a 29-7 Army lead.
What Went Right: A complete win. Army racked up 332 yards rushing, averaging 6.4 yards per carry. The defense played well, and even put some points on the board. After the tough loss against Rutgers it was good to see the team play a good game from start to finish.
What Went Wrong: Not much to say here after a 29-7 win. There are always things to polish between games, but nothing glaring. Pass protection continues to be an issue, but when the attempts are barely in double-digits it will not cripple the offense.
Player of the Game: FB Jared Hassin. Army was able to get Jared Hassin in space yesterday, and it paid off. Hassin rushed for a career-high 158 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 11.3 yards per carry. Hassin also caught three passes for 54 yards.
Final Word: This is a game the Black Knights had to win and they did. They now sit at 5-3, and taking three of their next four is very realistic. The best team in their final four games is Air Force, who will visit Army next week. After that, the Black Knights get a game against Kent State that they should win. Army finishes up with a two game stretch away from home against a very beatable Notre Dame team at Yankee Stadium and the annual Army-Navy matchup.
