Stanford’s Defense Comes Up Huge vs UDUB

Posted By Donovan Williams On Oct 31 2010 @ 12:14 pm In Stanford | No Comments

Earlier this week I called out the Stanford defense. Its performance has been inconsistent and unreliable. Then last night happened.

The Stanford defense came out with the its best performance of the season versus the Huskies of Washington. Here are the numbers:

  • Points allowed: 0
  • 1st Downs: 7
  • Yards allowed: 107
  • Yards per rush: 0.8

While the performance should be appreciated, Stanford fan should not think that the defense has completely turned the corner and will be just as dominating the rest of the season.

I wrote before about Washington’s uneven performances and Washington played a significant role in the numbers produced. In other words, Stanford’s defensive unit has not suddenly become the ’85 Bears.

One of the primary story lines for this game was the match up between potential 1st round quarterbacks, Stanford starter Andrew Luck and the Huskies Jake Locker. Almost two dozen NFL scouts attended the game to get a first hand look at both prospects.

Check-mate Luck.

Luck led the Cardinal offense to another efficient performance. Luck accounted for 284 yards from scrimmage. Meanwhile the performance and possibly the pressure proved to be too much for Locker. He was dreadful. His line: 7-14, 64 yards and 2 picks.

Next week the Cardinal take on Arizona. Arizona and Stanford are currently tied for 2nd in the PAC-10. We’ll have more on that game next week.
