Week 7 Review: FAU’s defense sparks 21-9 victory over FIU

It may have taken seven weeks, but FAU’s defense finally found its stride as they helped spark a 21-9 victory over Florida International University on Saturday, Oct. 30th.
FAU (2-5, 1-3) came into this game with its season on the line. A loss here would have ended the Owls hopes of a late bowl game run. For FIU (2-5, 2-1) a win would have secured them a stronger foothold in the Sun Belt conference standings. As it stood, FAU had won eight of the nine meetings between these rivals which is known as the Shula Bowl.
The Owls defense stepped up to spark a much needed victory for FAU, effectively ending a five game losing streak. The defensive was able to hold FIU to three field goals with no touchdowns, which is a first for this defense this season. The D-line did an excellent job of putting pressure on FIU quarterback Wesley Caroll who threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter. Two of which landed in the hands of safety Marcus Bartels on back-to-back possessions.
The Owls offense, which has been struggling big time the last few weeks, finally got into a groove in this game. After a slow start of being forced to punt five consecutive times in the first half, the second half Owl offense show began. Following a red zone hook-up from quarterback Jeff Van Camp to wide receiver Lester Jean in the fourth, Alfred Morris was able to find the end zone on a 16 yard burst giving the Owls the lead. To top things off, the game ended with running back Willie Floyd breaking for a 65 yard touchdown sprint down the sideline giving the Owls a 21-9 victory.
FAU will next travel to Kentucky to take on Western Kentucky University on Saturday, Nov. 6th.
Bottom Line: This was a much needed win for FAU. The defense was able to hold FIU to just three field goals which gave the offense the opportunity to shine. I’m not sure where FAU got its new found motivation, but it was very effective. Lets hope they can keep up the energy for the Western Kentucky game next week.
