Chiefs Survive Bills in Overtime

Most players will tell you to give it all you have for 60 minutes and if you can do that, you will get the job done. However, this time it took a full 75 minutes to declare a winner. The Chiefs held off a late Buffalo Bills rally with a 13-10 victory in overtime, putting them at 5-2 on the year and staying undefeated at home this season.
The goat turned hero was kicker Ryan Succup who missed his first overtime field goal attempt, but nailed his second try in the waning seconds of the overtime. A second consecutive overtime loss in as many weeks, sums up the Bills winless season in a nutshell. The Bill are now a franchise worst 0-7 heading into next week.
But on to the victors! The Chiefs, lead the AFC West with a firm grasp. The Chiefs ran at will against the Bills defense, but dumb penalties and mistakes kept the Chiefs from putting this game out of reach. Coach Todd Haley is seen as a genius for his timeout call in overtime, nullifying Ryan Lindell’s 53 yard field goal. Taking a book out of Coach Mike Shanahan, the now popular icing of the kicker milliseconds before the snap has become all the rage. Coaches are sometimes seen as geniuses or in some cases dopes, but not today.
Matt Cassel was just the ever efficient quarterback 14/26 for 152 yards and a one yard score to the hot fantasy football player that is Dwayne Bowe. The story of the Chiefs offense was Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs offensive line. Charles rushed for 177 yards while catching 4 passes for 61 yards. The Chiefs were not able to win the time of possession or out together any long drives due to their inefficiency on third downs, 26%. Not converting on third downs can kill a team, but on this day the defense was just as tough as any.
An Eric Berry led defense had the play of the game for the Chiefs as he picked off Ryan Fitzpatrick with under 35 seconds to play with the Bills driving. Fitzpatrick looked as if the ball slipped out of his hands, got tipped, and into the arms of Berry killing any last second field goal attempt.
The Chiefs have shown as we make our way towards the midway point of the season, that they can play with just about anybody, be able to grind it out, score points, make plays, and play tough defense. This is an exciting time for Chiefs fans, with young players, experienced coaches, the sky is the limit for this team. They keep putting the critics to bed as they keep winning each week.
The Chiefs now look ahead to two road division games, this week at the black hole in Oakland and the following in Denver to a struggling Bronco team off their bye week. The road will not get any easier as the season progresses, but the Chiefs have come to show they are the real deal. Check back later in the week for a preview of the upcoming matchup with the Raiders.
