UCF took a commanding lead in Conference USA’s East Division by beating fellow East member ECU, 49-35.
With the win, and Southern Mississippi’s loss, the Knights essentially have a two game lead. UCF is undefeated in conference. ECU has one conference loss, but now UCF would have the tiebreaker over them, and Southern Miss has two conference losses.
UCF was in control from beginning to end. The offense was as potent as ever with 5 rushing touchdowns and 2 passing. The Knights did not punt the entire game.
Jeff Godfrey’s progress continued. The true freshman QB made smart decisions all game and commanded the UCF offense like he had been doing it for a while. In addition to his ability to scramble, fans saw the arm strength and accuracy on a deep first quarter touchdown pass to Kamar Aiken.
Former walk-on Ronnie Weaver and backup Latavius Murray are turning into quite the running back combo. The duo had over two hundred hards rushing and 5 scores. All of this without the Knights most productive back from last season, Brynn Harvey, who was recently redshirted after missing the first half of the season due to injury.
The defense had an average game. The Pirates were able to move the ball consistently, however the Knights defense was able to force a few punts, unlike ECU. If not for a few third-and-long conversions, the score cold have been even more lopsided.
For this class it was the first win over ECU, who has won the East the past two seasons.
UCF has a short week as it turns its attention to Houston on Friday night. Although Houston is without start QB Case Keenum, it will still be a tough task for the Knights on the road. The Houston faithful are sure to be pumped up as the game will air nationally on ESPN 2 at 8:00 pm. Last year, the Knights beat Houston on homecoming, which was their first over a ranked opponent in school history.
