Joe Paterno could probably care less about reaching a milestone win, but his 5-3 Nittany Lions could give him the 400th victory of his career on Saturday by beating Northwestern (6-2).
In this game quarterback controversies abound!
Walk-on Matt McGloin (the first walk-on ever to start under center in Happy Valley) led Penn State to a huge win over Michigan last week while Rob Bolden, who was kept out of the game after suffering a concussion the week before, would like to get his starting job back.
On the other side of the field, Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa is recovering from a concussion as well and took about 75% of the snaps in practice this week. Persa was a top-rated passer among Pennsylvania high school players, grew up a Penn State fan, has alumni in his family but was not recruited by Paterno and his coaches. Persa ranks second in the nation in completion percentage so the PSU defense will have its work cut out for it.
Penn State will have home-field advantage and if it does a repeat performance in Beaver Stadium of last week’s win, including a strong ground game, JoePa should have a 400 next to his name by Saturday night.
