Buffone’s Weekend Menu: Decisions, Decisions…

On the menu this week is a group of borderline starters who will make your team soft and portly and as always, I’ll recommend some healthier and more efficient alternatives.
Fattening: Cedric Benson- Benson may have caught your eye last year with a moderately impressive 1251 yards and 6 TDs but the former first round pick is showing his real stripes this year. Benson is highly one-dimensional and doesn’t posses that second level speed needed to break big runs. Do not slot Benson in this week against a Steelers defense that only allows 58.9 rushing yards a game and is coming off a bad tasting loss in New Orleans last week. Benson is deadweight at this point.
Try this Instead: Michael Bush- If you don’t have the privilege of owning Darren McFadden, try the next best thing this week. Bush may not have the overall yards that McFadden has, but he does have 307 rushing yards with 4 TDs (same amount of rushing TDs as McFadden.) There will be plenty of carries and dump off passes to go around this week as the Raiders are at home against a Kansas City Defense that gives up nearly 100 yards a game on the ground. Not to mention, it’s still up in the air on who will be taking the snaps for the Raiders this Sunday so either way, don’t look for Oakland to try to air it out too much.
Fattening: Matt Schaub- Based on the preseason hype, there hasn’t been a bigger letdown at QB that Schaub. The Houston QB has only thrown for 1739 yards (9th in NFL) for 10 TDs (Tied for 14th in NFL) and 6 INTs. It’s not going to get any easier for Schaub this week when he goes up against a San Diego defense that is 1st in the NFL in pass defense.
Try This Instead: Eli Manning- The lesser of the Mannings is primed to have big outing against Seattle this week. The Seahawks are 29th in pass defense and give up 267.7 on average a week through the air. Eli may have some consistently issues but has passed for 9TDs in his last three games. If Eli can shake the INT fever, he should put up big points.
Fattening: Mike Williams (SEA)- I assure you, this isn’t just a funny pun on Williams once balloon-like frame. Williams has apparently set his career back on the right track since reuniting with Pete Carroll in Seattle but he’s in store to hit a wall this week. Williams has an impressive 33 receptions but only has 1TD to his name and he’s about to go against a New York Giants defense that ranks 2nd in pass defense by only allowing a little over 177 aerial yards a game. Williams may be slimmer but he will make your fantasy team pudgy this week.
Try This Instead: Mike Williams (TB)- The other Mike Williams in the league however, is a solid play this week. Even though he has one less reception than his same-name counterpart, he has 3 more TDs (32 receptions with 4 TDs.) The Tampa Bay Williams will have an easier adversary this week when he goes up against the 27th ranked passing defense in Atlanta. The Falcons give up over 260 yards a game in the air so look for Williams to get plenty of targets.
