EMU Goes Back on the Road

YPSILANTI, Mich. — If these two programs could look into a mirror each would see each other steering back at them because these two teams are the same team.
Both team rely upon their quarterbacks for the bulk of their offense success and each other defense is questionable because both squads have a tendency to give up too many big plays giving up too many points.
Eastern Michigan University football team is coming off of a bye week, a chance to rest all those nagging injuries and let the dark cloud of controversy with the five players suspended because of team rule violation.
Eagles football coach Ron English is not moving on forgiving or reinstating the players: seniors linebacker Tim Fort, running back Dwayne Priest, wide receiver Tyrone Burke , defensive back Latarrius Thomas and sophomore linebacker Steve Brown.
“There are some things you can be lenient about,” English said in a recent interview with reporters. “There are some things you can not but rules are in place for a reason.”
With three games left in the season the Eagles will be looking to regain the feeling of euphoria that the team experience with the overtime victory at Ball State University - the first step though is to take care of business at Waldo Stadium, the home of Western Michigan University Saturday afternoon.
English’s offense game plan has had a week to prepare for the Broncos and quarterback Alex Gillett should be ready to read the Bronco defense, he leads the Eagles rushing and passing so the Bronco defense will shadow him which should open up other people to participate and contribute to offense giving Gillett a chance to catch his breath and hoping to also catch the Broncos defense looking the other way.
Tailback Javonti Greene is a freshman from Florida and is the first Eagle in history to have two 50-yard plus touchdown runs his place in the record book was against the University of Virginia.
Greene is a power runner and has the ability to get off tackle with some quickness but he has a tendency get to the hole and not follow the blocking turning a chance for a large gain into an adventure.
If the running game can catch the Broncos to over load the box then Gillett and the passing game can finally come alive because missing from the offense is the big play ability of sophomore wide receiver Kinsman Thomas and Gillett’s security blanket senior tight end Ben Thayer.
Thomas leads the team with four touchdown receptions and has an average of 19.3 yards per catch and Thayer leads the Eagles with 24 receptions and has found the end zone three times.
Thayer is eligible for Academic All-American honors after being selected to the All-District IV Academic First Team. Thayer holds a 3.6 grade point average majoring in math/secondary education.
Eagle defensive coordinator Phil Snow has been able to work during the bye week in getting his defense ready to execute against the Broncos.
Centrial Michigan University took advantage of Western Michigan University ability not holding onto to the ball and then rallied to beat the Broncos 26-22 putting Bronco football coach Bill Cubit upon the hot seat in Kalamazoo.
The Broncos receivers are a stable of quick and steady group. Leading the way for the Broncos is wide receiver is Cody Wilson who grabbed a career best 12 receptions for 185 yards and one touchdown against Central Michigan University.
Getting the ball to Wilson is Bronco quarterback Alex Carder, he completed 27 of 44 passes for 272 yards and three touchdown against Central Michigan University.
Cubit has not been pleased with performance running back Aaron Winchester and replaced him against the Chippewas with tailback Brian Fields.
Fields fumbled with 1:37 to play at the 2-yard line as the Broncos were poised to take the lead.
“It is unacceptable, point blank. I just lost focus,” Fields said about his fumble. “I did not squeeze high and tight like the coaches teach.”
The Eagles defense will have to crowd the line of scrimmage because the Broncos have trouble running the ball and have a tendency to fumble putting the Broncos defense in a short field situation.
Snow is going to have to get maximum effort from the linebackers and from the defensive backs getting the Broncos offense in manageable situation for the defense should create mistakes from the Broncos offense.
Both programs are looking to move forward and get into a good frame for the final drive of the season.
