Hope For Cellar Dwellers

It’s coming up on Week 10 of the regular season, which means there are even less games left in the fantasy football season. Some of you may be in that dreadful position that haunts all serious fantasy footballers; last place. It’s that time of year when playoff races are heating up and some teams that were simply “stumbling out of the gates” in the beginning of the season are now being left for dead. If you’re an owner like me, you think about fantasy football all year round. But, that anxiety and excitement around draft time can turn into frustration and confusion at this point of the year. I speak from personal experience when I say there are no words for the feeling of being a non-factor in your league at such an early stage. Yet, I’m here to bear good news for you and your misfit team. There are still some things you can do that will let the other owners know you’re still around and hopefully inspire you to continue checking your team consistently.

If you’re in a head-to-head league, you’re always in good shape to play the spoiler. While your playoffs hopes may be dashed, some other teams are still fighting hard for that last spot. While that team is looking forward to competing with other contending squads, drive a nail into their playoff coffin with an unexpected win. Remember, misery loves company.

If you’re in a keeper league or dynasty, you have even more plays to make. If your league permits trading of future draft picks, now is a great time to be thinking of the future so this embarrassment you call a season does not happen again. Dump off some of your talent to a team that is looking to make a late run for a future first or second round pick that will help you craft a much better team in the 2011 season. Keep in mind; keeper leagues require you to think just as much into the future as the present. Another trade move you have is bringing in a crown jewel to be the foundation of your future team. Take advantage of other cellar dwellers that are still stubbornly trying to keep their sinking ship afloat. Try making a package deal where you include 2-4 solid players for one elite cash cow. If your season is truly wrecked, it doesn’t matter that Jabar Gaffney is having his best statistical season in years or Mike Wallace is turning into a long ball threat every play. It’s doubtful you’d be keeping those kinds of players at the end of the year anyhow so strike while the iron is hot. Compile a nice looking player package from a statistical standpoint and dangle it in front of a desperate owner for a player of Darren McFadden or Maurice Jones-Drew’s caliber. This move will truly help you start anew next year.

Another move a last-placer in a keeper league can make is taking advantage of big injuries to big names. Once a player like Tony Romo or Dallas Clark gets put on the IR, it’s likely to see their owners throw them on the scrap heap to make room for a replacement. Scoop these guys up if you’re interested in having them next year, I’m sure you have room to spare on your roster. Yours truly was sly enough to pick Tom Brady up off waivers after his week one knee injury in 2008. With all this being stated, it obvious that no matter what place you’re in, you can still play a key role in shaping the outcome of your league this year and the years to come.
