Flames Show Some Character Win 4-2

The Calgary Flames gave up the first goal of a game for the first time in ten games and apparently that is the key to victory for the Flames. Calgary trailed 1-0 and 2-1 going into the third period when the newly formed line combination of Backlund-Moss-Hagman took over the game for Calgary.

Backlund scored to tie the game at two midway through the third period on a nice effort form both Moss and Hagman. David Moss then banged home a loose puck to give Calgary the lead for the first time and for Moss had to be a large monkey off of his back, as he could have easily had four goals in this game but was unable to finish chances into largely wide open nets.

Curtis Glencross scored his second of the game into the empty net to salt the game away for Calgary 4-2. Brandon Yip scored the first of the game for the Avalanche and continues to impress me with his game every time I see him play. Chris Stewart also tallied for Colorado and he really has the chance to be a big time impact player in this league.

Miikka Kiprusoff was very good in this game and really held the Flames in the game during the second period while the Avalanche continued to pile on the pressure in order to extend their lead but Kipper managed to slam the door and give his team a chance to get back in it.

The first line again struggled to produce anything for the Flames. I believe the problem now is that everyone in the building including the air head cheerleader that has never seen a game knows that whenever Stajan or Tanguay have the puck they will do everything possible to get the puck to Jarome, and the opposition just collapses on the Flames captain snuffing out any play. At some point they need to start using Jarome as a decoy and drive the puck to the net themselves.

Cory Sarich had a tough game for Calgary taking three penalties and two of them were just dumb penalties highlighted by jumping into an altercation at the end of the second period, drawing an extra minor. Standing up for a team mate that needs it is commendable but in this case I think Jarome was just fine. Cory just needs to start making some better decisions.

At the end of the day it was not the Flames best performance but like the last couple of games it was good enough to win and this time they managed to find two points to pull themselves up to .500 and end the four game losing streak they were on.

Next up for the Flames is a date in the desert with the Phoenix Coyotes Friday night. The burning question for that game is will there be more Flames fans or Coyotes fans in the stands for this one!

Have a good one!
