Three keys to the win: Fore-checking…Check! Steve Mason…Check! Scoring…Check! Check! Check!
The Columbus Blue Jackets came to play tonight as they shellacked the first place St. Louis Blues 8-1.
Highlights from tonights’ game:
Steve Mason made a huge save on T.J. Oshie early in the game to protect the Blue Jackets lead. All night he was square to the shooter and was at the top of his creasing not giving any room to the Blues shooters as he made 29 saves.
Goal Scoring: Before tonights’ game the Blue Jackets had not scored more than three goals in a game this season. When the Jackets coach Scott Arniel was asked earlier today about the lack of scoring by his team, he dismissed it and told media is was not about the goals but the wins.
Derick Brassard made a beautiful pass to Jakub Voracek early in the first period to earn the first of three assists which kept his point scoring streak alive at 8 games. He continues to show he is capable of being the Jackets number one centre.
Jakub Voracek is the man for any future shootouts. He scored two incredible breakaway goals in the game tonight. The first he fired in the top right hand corner and the second he roofed it with his backhand.
Antoine Vermette has struggled to score this season but continues to create excellent chances for himself and his teammates. He scored one goal and added an assist tonight which will hopefully be the beginning of some consistent offense. It’s just a matter of time before he breaks out.
Nikita Filatov couldn’t buy a goal tonight but did earn two assists. He is working hard to create offensive opportunities and is beginning to show glimpses of brilliance. He attracted the attention of 3 St. Louis Blues players behind the net before passing the puck to R.J. Umberger who blasted the puck past Ty Conklin to give the Jackets a 6-1 lead.
Jaroslav Halak was chased from the net early in the second period as he allowed 4 goals on 15 shots. The Jackets got to Halak early and never let him build any confidence.
Rick Nash did not return in the third period, however, no details have been given at this point. It would be a costly win if the Blue Jackets lost their best player.
Kris Russell continues to struggle as he is re-cooperating from his knee injury. He doesn’t seem to be confident offensively and is playing timid in his own end.
The Jackets showed they won’t back down from anyone as there were three fights and 82 minutes of penalty minutes between the two teams in the third period. It looked like it was going to get real ugly midway through the third period but settled down until Derick Dorsett was involved in a fight with BJ Crombeen with only 15 seconds left to play.
This was a huge test for the Blue Jackets and they passed with flying colours.
Go Jackets Go!
