There’s been a lot of talk over the past week about whether or not the Lakers can reach 73 wins, surpassing the ’95-’96 Bulls.
Who cares? I don’t.
The NBA regular season is as worthless as baseball’s.
Think about it.
There are 30 teams in the league and 16 of them will make the playoffs. What a joke. That’s like having half of all the Division I NCAA football teams attend a bowl…oh wait, that happens too. E-me. Bad example.
But here is why I don’t care about the Lakers going for 73 wins: Laker fans want titles not regular season wins.
That is it. End of story.
A 73 win season with victories over the Clippers, Raptors, Timberwolves and Wizards does not make me proud as a Laker fan. All you hope for as a Laker fan is that the Lakers make it through the regular season relatively unscathed.
Unless the Lakers are playing in June and hold a parade on Figueroa Street shortly after they dispatch of the Celtics or Heat in the finals, nothing else matters. Winning NBA title #17 is all that matters.
Right now you read pundits spread the 73 win fodder. Go ahead. I guess there is nothing really else to write about regarding this team.
No one willing to write about how quickly Matt Barnes and Steve Blake have grasped the intricacies of the triangle.
No one willing to write about this being the deepest Laker team in a decade.
No one willing to write about how Ron Artest has found his three-point stroke and is in the best physical condition he has ever been in as a Laker.
Few, but not enough are writing about how Lamar Odom is playing the best basketball of his life.
There are a few writing how Pau is a more dominating physical presence in the paint.
And a few share that Kobe looks healthier than ever. But that is always the throw in, never the lead.
But that is fine. These are not sexy things. And as long as the Lakers maintain their perfect record, the lure of a 73 win season will continue to draw the national media to the ’96 Bulls flame.
But I don’t care if they win 73 or not.
Go ahead and win 73 in the regular season, but make sure you are the last team to win a game in June.
