The Chargers are now 4-5 going into week ten and their bye week. The Chargers beat Houston in Houston for a huge win on the road, it was their first road win of the season. If the Chargers want to make the playoffs they will have to win some more tough games on the road this season. A friend of mine said last weekend that, “If the Chargers beat the Texans, I would give them an 80% chance of making the playoffs.” I do agree with his comment, I’m not sure about 80% but the Chargers did get a must win in Houston and things a definitely starting to turn around in Charger town. The Chargers will play the Broncos twice and the Chiefs and Raiders both once more at home on the season. I really like the Bolts chances of going 4-0 in the division to finish the season. This will obviously be the best way for the Chargers to improve their chances of making the playoffs, as it will most likely take an AFC West title to get into the postseason.
Things I like going forward are, Philip Rivers has proven that no matter who is healthy and on the field, he can get the job done and lead the team to victory. Although the Chargers are getting Vincent Jackson back and hopefully Gates, Floyd, and Naanee will be healthy soon, it is nice to now that in the case of future set backs in the depth chart Charger fans can be confident in the teams ability to win games without having their star names out on the field. I also can’t express how big it was for the Chargers to win on Sunday while giving Gates two weeks off with the bye week coming up, and having Floyd and Naanee get extra needed time to recover as well. Another thing to like going forward is the Defense is playing better then they have in the last three years. They are not a shut down ”D” but with the offense the Chargers have they are strong enough to be able to win a lot of football games.
Things that need to change are, the obvious ones we see every week, the special teams blunders, the penalties and young mistakes, and the turnover ratio. The big one for me is the turnover ratio. If the Chargers could just have an even ratio they should win at least five of their last seven games. This means the defense is going to have to make more big plays and our RB’s really need to start holding onto the ball. Which brings up Ryan Mathews. Mathews has looked impressive, at least to me. He has had multiple nagging injuries and has had problems with ball security but I like what I have seen out of the rookie. I don’t think the fumbles will be a problem for him in the future, most have been on hard hits and strips that most players wouldn’t be able to hold onto the ball from. It is crucial the Chargers have Mathews healthy and in the game plan moving forward if they want to really turn things around. Lastly I really like what I have seen from the O-line the last two weeks after struggling earlier in the season.
