If Penn State hopes to add to Joe Paterno’s historic win total, it’s going to have an awfully hard time of it this weekend. Coming off a huge victory over Northwestern at home, the Nittany Lions take on Tyrrelle Pryor and the 8-1 Ohio State Buckeyes.
Although Matt McGloin is listed first on the depth chart at QB, JoePa is not abandoning Rob Bolden. Both should see playing time.
In traditional PSU-style, however, Paterno is hinting that the defense needs to step up the pressure if the Nittany Lions stand a chance.
In his press conference, Paterno said, “Probably two years now…we were not very good (at pressuring the quarterback). That’s one thing we’re not doing a good job on defensively. We’re not getting (to the quarterback) and we’ve spent an awful lot of time on trying to create some turnovers.
We don’t make the play (on defense). We’ve started to make some plays offensively. Now we’ve got to start to make some defensively in the area you’re talking about.”
So there you have it. The key to this game lies not in when the Nittany Lions have the ball but rather in what they do to get it back.
NOTES: Stefen Wisniewski is the Nittany Lions’ first Wuerffel Trophy finalist. Named after former Florida QB Danny Wuerffel, the award recognizes athletic, academic and community service leadership.
