View from my Couch: Bucs Need a Blowout

Check list for a good team

- Win the games your supposed to win- Check

- Quarterback that’s clutch under pressure- Check!

- Capitalize on other teams mistakes- Check

- Hang in with teams better or as good as you- Check (at least last week)

- Blowout Bad Teams-… still waiting

This week the Bucs take on the downtrodden Carolina Panthers. At the beginning of the season, experts picked the Panthers to be better than Tampa. They were wrong.

Turns out Matt Moore was bad so he was benched for Jimmy Clausen. Jimmy Clausen was worse, so they went back to Matt Moore. Now Moore is on IR and it’s back to Clausen. The vaunted running back tandem of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart has been disappointing and this week neither is playing. And to make matters worse, their best offensive lineman just went on IR.

So why am I so worried?

This screams “trap game”. Why? Well, the Bucs are coming of an oh-so-close loss to the Falcons, while the Panthers are coming off a blowout loss to New Orleans. That mix is scary enough. But factor in all the injuries to Carolina and you have to imagine they’ll bring the “kitchen sink playbook”.

That’s pretty much the playbook the Browns used to beat the Saints and Patriots. You fake punts, you run the double passes, you blitz every play, go for it on 4th down. Essentially, you pull out the plays you’ve always wanted to run because you have nothing to lose.

And John Fox has nothing, I mean NOTHING to lose. Tampa you’ve been warned.

Tampa is coming off a tough loss, but if you believe in moral victories (I don’t) this was definitely one of them. They fought back after a sluggish start and nearly won. This week they need to keep that momentum going.

If I were coaching (or even playing Madden for that matter) it would be all about the run game. LeGarrette Blount should get 20-25 carries in this game, Caddy should get 5-10 touches total. Don’t know injuries yet, but it looks like Jeff Faine will be back, as will Earnest Graham so that will help. Carolina has struggled to stop the run (sound familiar Buc fans?) so exploit it.

I’m not really worried about the passing game, as long as Josh Freeman protects the ball. Look for Arrelious Benn to have another big game, since Mike Williams will be covered by Chris Gamble. I’d also expect Kellen Winslow to get his number called quite a bit as well.

Tampa should win this game and really need to, to keep playoff hopes alive. The next four games are going to be brutal at San Francisco (better than their record states), at Baltimore (that’s a tough road game), home against Atlanta (we’re terrible at home) and then at Washington (who’s knows? Maybe Rex Grossman will be the QB by then).

Tampa- 28

Carolina- 10
