Strong 2nd Half Propels Hokies, One Win Away from Coastal Crown

VIRGINIA TECH 26   UNC 10

I would first like to thank the many UNC fans that were very welcoming to me and my friends that made the drive.  It was a great time all around, and it was greatly appreciated.

The Hokies started off as slow as they usually do, giving up a first drive touchdown for what seems to be the 200th time this season.  While this may seem frustrating to Hokie fans, and confusing that we seem to win the toss, choosing to defer, and handing ourselves a 7 point deficit to start, it also seems to work.

The offense was very sharp, and Marcus Davis caught a pair of TD passes, as well as making great plays after the catch to lead the Hokie Offense.  Tyrod Taylor resorted to using his arm for the majority of the game, and added to his TD total for the season.  He now has thrown for 18 TD’s.  Ryan Williams also made a larger return to the offense, but still does not seem to be getting the reps we all want him to have.  He looked fresh, and broke off a couple great runs.

Jayron Hosley added 2 more interceptions to his amazing season total, none more crucial than his 4th quarter interception of TJ Yates’ pass that sealed the game.  The Hokies picked off Yates 4 times, and Eddie Whitley’s effort to pull the ball away from Erik Highsmith in the end zone prevented the Heels from scoring, and gave all the momentum to Virginia Tech.  The Hokies forced 6 UNC turnovers and all seemed to come at crucial points in the game.  After the Hokies seemed to be stopped, UNC return man Searcy slipped in an attempt to field a punt and touched the ball with his hand.  The fumbled punt was recovered by the Hokies, and sent the game far from reach.  The Hokies also forced a fumble by Anthony Elzy to roll out of the end zone for a touch back late in the 4th quarter.

The Hokies travel to Miami in 1 week in an attempt sure up the ACC Coastal Division. The Hokies need to win 1 out of their last 2 games to win the division, but losing to Miami is not an option for this team.  Tech looks to become the 1st team since FSU to go undefeated in conference play.  Riding an 8 game winning streak the Hokies now can become the lone team, with Texas struggling, to hold the active record for consecutive ten game winning seasons.

Players of the Game:  Marcus Davis 4 receptions, 81 Yards, 2 TD Jayron Hosley 36 return yards, 2 interceptions, 1 tackle
