The San Francisco 49ers beat division Rival

The 49ers win over division rival St. Louis Rams presented several firsts:

  • It is the 49ers first winning streak in 2010
  • It’s the first time the 49ers defense didn’t lose the game in the final drive forcing the game into overtime
  • It’s the first 300+ yard passing game for the new starting quarterback Troy Smith (it’s has not been officially announced, but it will be)

This win, along with an Arizona loss, moves the 49ers into 3rd place in the NFC West.

During the OT period, Troy Smith showed how strong he is.  It was 3rd and 2 and the 49ers decided to run a pass play (Frank Gore did have 87 yards rushing, so I’m not sure why they didn’t just give it to him).  Troy Smith was wrapped up and it looked like it was going to be a drive killing sack, but he fought and got a pass off.  The pass was incomplete, but he showed his ability to extend a play with his legs – something the 49ers have been missing since the Steve Young years.  Just to conclude what happened on the play, St. Louis was called on defensive pass interference, which kept the drive moving.

The defense did step up in the OT period and forced the dangerous Rams offense to punt after a 3 and out.

Three minutes and 43 seconds later, Joe Nedney kicked at 29-yard field goal to win the game.

Week 11 sees the upstart Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to San Francisco to face the 49ers
