Iowa Hawkeyes Drop to No. 20 in BCS, Bowl Prediction

After Saturday’s loss to the Northwestern Wildcats, the Iowa Hawkeyes (7-3, 4-2) dropped to No. 20 in the BCS standings and No. 21 in the AP polls.

Once in the running for the Big Ten conference title, Iowa’s loss has knocked them out of contention. They have fallen to No. 4 in the conference as well as in the conversation. However, with the team’s seven wins, they are bowl eligible.

According to the University of Iowa site [1], the Big Ten bowl line-up includes eight games beginning with the Dec. 28 Little Ceasars Bowl in Detroit.

So Hawkeye Nation, what are your options for your annual bowl vacation?

Right now, the option looks like it may be the January 1 Outback Bowl. Iowa has played in the bowl three times in the last 10 years (2004, 2006, and 2009), winning two of three times (one loss in 2006 against Florida, 31-24). If Iowa does go, they will play against an SEC team. This week, ESPN has predicted South Carolina [2] and CBS Sports [3]has an Iowa versus Arkansas bowl.

This bowl visit is predicated on a loss against Ohio State this weekend and an 8-4 record.

While we know Hawkeyes travel well, should Penn State also finish with an 8-4 record, they will also be in consideration for the Outback Bowl. At their last visit in 2007, they beat Tennessee, 20-10. Similar to Iowa, their fan base travels well.

And Penn State may also receive an invite based on the possibility this is JoePa’s last season.

I’m not ready to concede an Iowa loss against Ohio State on Saturday and review other bowl options. It’s still one week at a time and the conference title still needs to play out.

The Hawkeyes have expressed disappointment about their Northwestern loss and for many players, this week will be their last game at Kinnick Stadium (see Stanzi, Clayborn, Johnson-Koulianos, Donahue, Tarpinian to name a few). We’ll see if the Hawkeyes can rally for a big, surprising win against the No.9 Buckeyes.

Remember the Michigan State game?
