Typical of the Lakers to get lethargic in the regular season. I won’t say they are not trying, but they know there is nothing to play for as of yet.
It doesn’t mean they don’t care. Because you know they do. Lamar’s T at the end of the Suns game is a reflection of that.
But we all see the slow rotations on defense. The settling for the 3 point shot. It’s nothing new for us Laker fans.
I am sure we are going to read some jabs by Phil Jackson through the press on some of his players. I am sure we will read the typical apocalyptic articles in the LA Times saying that the Lakers sky is falling and their reign as champs is over.
Two words for you: settle down.
I am sure we will not see maximum effort by this team every day. That is fine. Kobe and D-Fish will make sure that the Lakers work on the little things that matter when it comes to the playoffs. The NBA regular season is a marathon, not a sprint.
They need to run like Roger Bannister pace, not Usain Bolt.
There will be games that the team will come out hard for. There will be games when they appear flat. As will all NBA teams.
The Lakers will go on two separate 7 game road trips. Well, one is a 6 + a Clipper road game, but still technically 7 road games. Historically, the Lakers get up for these roadies and is when the team starts building their playoff momentum.
But the keys to the Lakers this regular season are these:
1. Stay healthy.
2. Win home court throughout the playoffs.
3. If 2 can’t happen, win the 1 seed in the west.
That is all that matters. The Lakers will pace themselves. The question for you Laker fans out there is are you going to pace yourselves?
It’s a long season and you can’t go into cardiac arrest over a loss to the Suns.
Enjoy the winter.
When you come out of hibernation the Lakers will be exactly where they need to be.
