Canadiens, Flyers set for playoff rematch

It will be a clash of division leaders on Tuesday night as the Montreal Canadiens welcome the Philadelphia Flyers in a rematch of last year’s conference final. This contest is also arguably the Habs’ toughest challenge thus far this season, especially in light of the absence of Andrei Markov [1].

Offensively, the Flyers pose a significant threat, registering the second-most goals per game, trailing only the Washington Capitals in that category. Claude Giroux leads the team with 21 points, followed by Mike Richards at 19 points and the newly resigned Jeff Carter at 15 points. On top of that, their strong attack has been bolstered by the hot play of rookie netminder Sergei Bobrovsky, who has a sparkling 11-2-1 record along with a .934 save percentage. Sadly though, it is unlikely we will see a dual between potential calder candidates Bobrovksy and P.K Subban tonight. Having played less than 24 hours ago, winning 5-1 versus the Senators, it looks like Brian Boucher will get the start for the Flyers.

The absence of the Russian keeper also means that we will be denied a goaltending dual between two of the hottest hands in the league. Carey Price [2], who will start tonight, was named the week’s first star and has been nothing short of sensational. Thanks to his outstanding performance over the past seven days, the British Columbia native now ranks in the top-10 of every major goaltending category, namely wins, shutout, save percentage and goals against average.

As for the Andrei Markov watch, there is currently no update on his injury situation. Sadly, it is doubtful that the old saying that no news is good news will hold true in his case. Reports place Markov’s absence anywhere between 6 weeks and 8 months but are really nothing more than mere speculation at this point. In the meantime, Alexandre Picard will take his place at the blueline while Dustin Boyd [3] looks set to watch another game from the press box.
