For the first time in team history the Atlanta Falcons have reached the top spot in the online power rankings. ESPN.com as well as CBSsports.com have named the Falcons as the team to beat after the first half of the season. This might come as a huge surprise to many Falcons fans because they have never been higher than 6th on any NFL power rankings since they were introduced to main stream media in the late 90′s.
Even with a number 1 ranking in the NFL, the Falcons are still flying under the radar of much of the media coverage this week . Stories about the changes in Dallas, the Favre situation, and the Vick comeback have over shadowed the success of the Falcons. But if you ask anybody in the Falcons organization they will tell you that this number one ranking means absolutely nothing. The dirty birds are playing phenomenal at home this year. If they lock up home field advantage, look for them as a favorite to win the NFC and play for in the big game in Dallas. (their first since 1998).
The Falcons are coming in at 7-2 this weekend with shot at going 8-2 this Sunday against the Rams. The Rams are coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to the 49′ers and are looking to get back in the wild card hunt. One thing to look at this weekend is the Rams ability to stop the run. They post the leagues 6th best running defense and will give Turner and Snelling a tough time on the road. Look for Matt Ryan to carve up that weaker Ram’s secondary by utilizing Rody White and Tony G in the flats . The X factor of the game will be the effectiveness of Rookie-of-the-year candidate Sam Bradford, and the ability of Coleman and Abraham getting to the first overall draft pick.
With that said, I have the Falcons over the Rams 28-17. Also Falcon’s Corner Brent Grimes will get at least one pick and make his case for the pro bowl.
