Falcons, The New #1 in the Power Rankings

For the first time in team history the Atlanta Falcons have reached the top spot in the online power rankings. ESPN.com as well as CBSsports.com have named the Falcons as the team to beat after the first half of the season. This might come as a huge surprise to many Falcons fans because they have never been higher than 6th on any NFL power rankings since they were introduced to main stream media in the late 90′s.

Even with a number 1 ranking in the NFL, the Falcons are still flying under the radar of much of the media coverage this week . Stories about the changes in Dallas, the Favre situation, and the Vick comeback have over shadowed the success of the Falcons. But if you ask anybody in the Falcons organization they will tell you that this number one ranking means absolutely nothing.  The dirty birds are playing phenomenal at home this year. If they lock up home field advantage, look for them as a favorite to win the NFC and play for in the big game in Dallas. (their first since 1998).

The Falcons are coming in at 7-2 this weekend with shot at going 8-2 this Sunday against the Rams. The Rams are coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to the 49′ers and are looking to get back in the wild card hunt. One thing to look at this weekend is the Rams ability to stop the run. They post the leagues 6th best running defense and will give Turner and Snelling a tough time on the road. Look for Matt Ryan to carve up that weaker Ram’s secondary by utilizing Rody White and Tony G in the flats .  The X factor of the game will be the effectiveness of Rookie-of-the-year candidate Sam Bradford, and the ability of Coleman and Abraham getting to the first overall draft pick.

With that said, I have the Falcons over the Rams 28-17. Also Falcon’s Corner Brent Grimes will get at least one pick and make his case for the pro bowl.

All this tells us is the level of parity and mediocrity in the NFL – especially in the NFC. Being 7-2 in a weak conference tells you that Atlanta is the proverbial valedictorian of Remdial School. Who has beaten them in their two losses? Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Doesn’t the fact that Atlanta lost to Philly prove that they are not a better team than Philly? What about the fact that 3 of their wins have been by 5 points or fewer? This is kind of like when a candidate wins in a race of 5 candidates with 38% of the vote. Not a mandate from the majority of the populous but there has to be a winner. Atlanta may be the mathematical top dog but don’t crown them with anything. Tampa and New Orleans are just one game back with plenty to play – AND you have to hope all three teams will make the playoffs. Six NFC teams are 6-3 plus the NFC West has to post a division winner regardless of record. If they playoffs started today, Atlanta would win the NFC South but 5 NFC teams have more points scored and 5 NFC teams have a better points against – three of which may not even make the playoffs. What does that tell you? The Falcons record is indicating a weak schedule.

I am not arguing that the Falcons are the best team in the NFC, I am just stating that 2 huge media outlets believe they are the head of the class in week 11. In a rat-race of a year in the NFL, the dirty birds have been the most consistent team as well as the most balanced. Defenses not only have to stop Matt Ryan and Rody White, but they have to deal with Michael Turner pounding it down their throats. No other team in the league has a duel threat offense as good as the Falcons. The Falcons two loses that you point out were both against playoff teams and both of them were on the road. And the Pitt game was an overtime loss. I’ll concede the point that the NFC is watered-down this year, but the AFC is not running away with anything either.

Your an absolute idiot. All you did was basically hate on the Falcons using big words, giving no explanation for why you think they shouldn’t be number 1. They are the most consistent team hands down. Get your head out of your ass buddy.

First off, learn spelling and grammar. Secondly, I gave you 12 reasons why the Falcons are not as good as their PR suggests. They have been beaten by better teams who are ranked lower in these polls, most of their wins have been by a FG if not a last-second TD – which is not a convincing mandate AND they could just as easily be 3-6. Look at the schedule. Look at the margin of victory. Look at where they rank offensively and defensively compared to just the other NFC teams. 5 NFC teams have more points scored and 5 NFC teams have a better points against – three of which may not even make the playoffs. What does that tell you? The Falcons record is indicating a weak schedule, some fortunate wins and a tenuous hold on their division lead.

Disagree with me all you want but don’t attack me personally because you discounted my 12 reasons – and don’t say “your an idiot” because that simply proves that “you’re the idiot”

You’re entitled to your opinion. Mine is that this tells us the level of parity and mediocrity in the NFL – especially in the NFC. Being 7-2 in a weak conference tells you that Atlanta is the proverbial valedictorian of Remdial School. I’m entitled to my opinion too!

You are an Idiot, The NFL is only about if you win or lose!!! No Body cares about by how much. The Falcons are 8 and 2! That means the BEST in the NFC! I will have more to say after the Packers game. Go Falcons

          1. Christopher Rowe Nov 27 201011:03 am

So according to you, it doesn’t matter if you beat the Little Sisters of Mercy or the Orphan’s Home for the Blind and Malnourished… so long as you win? OK if you want life to be that simple, go right ahead. The rest of us out here in the real world tend to cpmplicate things by grasping the concepts of level of competition, parity and improvement/adjustments over a season or series.

The Jets are also 8-2. Does that make them the best team in the AFC? So according to you the Falcons and Jets should play the Super Bowl right now. What happens next week when two other teams have the best record? This is why you play a season and gauge the best team by performance, not just by record.

As a huge Falcon supporter, I am not sure the Falcons are an elite team in the NFC let alone the NFC. They are playing excellent football so far this season and the Raven game certainly shows that to be true but there are still some cracks in seperating the Falcons from the elite teams in the NFL. Lets hope this weeks road win will mark the trail to the Falcons and onward to the playoffs…….

From week three and on we have been hearing these sports reporters tell us how weak the NFC is. I just don’t see it. Where is the proof? I understand your point Rowe I just don’t see any evidence pointing out that the AFC has a huge gap in talent over the NFC. The AFC might be a better conference but not by much.

Lets now look at strength of schedule. STAT: Falcon’s opponents combined record is 44-40. Thats the best in the NFC.

Once again I have my doubts that the Falcons are the best team in the league, but I can see why both ESPN and CBSsports both had them as their number one.

You chose your words carefully. I never got the impression you were claiming the Falcons to be the NFC’s best (though one easily could).

Turner’s strong and Ryan showed real maturity & poise in the come-from-behind win he engineered last week over a highly-touted Raven’s defense that was made to look downright pedestrian those last two minutes. In fact, the entire Falcon team showed poise & resiliency in over-coming their earlier mistakes.

    Good balance, good write.
