It’s a Bull Market

For those of you fantasy owners who have seen your trade deadline come and go and you’re stuck with some players you were hoping to unload, let this article be nothing less than a lesson to strike while the iron is hot and don’t ask for too much in return. For those of you who are still able to trade, take advantage while you can. The fantasy stock market constantly fluctuates and it’s necessary for you to cash in at the right time. Just ask Randy Moss owners. They sure don’t have the leverage they had about a month ago in the trade market. Holding on to a name like Moss only goes so far until you can’t get much more than a backup running back for the aging prima donna. It’s getting close to playoff time and it’s essential capitalize on other owners who are scrambling to make a late run and pick up a guy who will put them over the top.  Here are a few names that have reached their maximum fantasy value and should be “sold” off quickly and a few names you should consider buying cheap because they haven’t “hit the roof” yet.

Sell Jon Kitna: Tony Romo’s backup is a locker room favorite amongst his peers and is coming off a 3 TD games against a New York Giants defense that was ranked the best in the NFL in total defense. However, it’d be wise to trade Kitna off for anything right now because there’s still the mystique that Jason Garrett is turning the Cowboys around and their offense is going to be greatly improved. This isn’t likely due to the fact that Garrett has controlled the offense all year as offensive coordinator.  The Cowboys finally flexed their offensive muscles a little last week so there’s still a slight possibility of Tony Romo returning before the end of the year. If you don’t trade him now, Kitna will rot on your roster until next year.

Buy David Garrard: If Garrard’s great performance against Houston last week isn’t enough to convince you, the Jag’s QB has 9 TDs and only 2 INTs in his last four games.  Garrard is still only starting in about 25% of all Yahoo! Leagues so it’s very plausible that he’d come cheap in a trade. Garrard’s future opponents include poor pass defenses like Cleveland, Washington, and Houston. If you’re questionable a QB, pursue Garrard hard.

Sell Steven Jackson: Unless you plan on making Jackson your keeper, now would be a prime time to unload the St. Louis running back. Jackson has compiled a very solid amount of rushing yards with 757 but that doesn’t do much in fantasy. Jackson only has 2 TDs in his last four games and only has 3 TDs on the year. Jackson is still a household name in the running back game so look to get the most out of that. Also, take into account Sam Bradford is averaging 37 pass attempts a game, which obviously takes carries away from Jackson. It’d be wise to sell Jackson now because his stock isn’t going to get much better against run defenses like San Francisco and Atlanta in the next two weeks.

Buy Knowshon Moreno: Moreno has been banged up throughout the season but is getting healthy at just the right time. He rushed for over 100 yards last week for the first time this year and is making an impact in the receiving game having 3 receiving TDs in his last three games. The Broncos have stated that getting Moreno more involved in the offense is a must so look for them to use him heavily in the running and passing game. Moreno will also have the luxury of going up against sub-par defenses like Kansas City, Arizona, and Houston in the weeks to come. Starting in less than half of all Yahoo! Fantasy Football Leagues, Moreno should be somewhat easy to acquire.

Garrard doesn’t even have 200 yards in 6 of 8 games this year

I like to think TDs and lack of interceptions are more essential to fantasy success than yardage. The fact that he’s only starting in a quarter of all Yahoo! Leagues and is Top 10 in both TD passes and Least Amount of INTs Thrown makes him a pretty good bargain.

But it’s a cumulative progression with one stat often leading to the other stat.
Garrard has often has a favorable TD to INT ratio but he has never been a top 10 fantasy QB.
Your rersults based line of thinking makes me relook at Marcedes not Garrard.

I believe a “results based line of thinking” is exactly what you want from a fantasy standpoint. The fact that he’s “never been a Top 10 Fantasy QB” doesn’t mean he can’t be one now. Fantasy studs come out of the woodwork all the time. Not to mention, if you’re interested in Mercedes Lewis, think about who’s throwing those TD passes to him. If you’re interested in discussing this more, I’ll be talking about it on my show at 1PM Eastern Time and you can call in. You can watch it on the Internet at http://www.thatsportspodcast.com/live

Not making mistakes is important… but the difference between Garrard and the next level of NFL/Fantasy QB is the production – not the lack of mistakes. Low INT is fantastic but if Garrard fails to throw a pick and only gets you 9 points, he is less valuable than when Favre throws for 400 yards, 5 TD and INT – because he nets you more points! Garrard has scored 118 points in 10 weeks = 11.8 PPW average. 15 QB rate better than Garrard and this is your fantasy find of the week? How about Mark Sanchez or Josh Freeman?

Sell Jackson and buy Moreno? Ranks 22 among RB behind the likes of Peyton Hillis, Mike Tollbert, Ladanaian Thomlinson, Brandon Jackson, Jahvid Best, Jamaal Charles, Darren McFadden and others.

What’s next? Breaking news that Kyle Orton may be a better fantasy QB than Jay Cutler? Is Emmitt Smith coming out of retirement?

The article clearly states, “If you’re questionable at QB…” It doesn’t mean drop Brees or Brady or even Kyle Orton for that matter for Garrard. He is a good play if you need a quick stop QB. Clearly this is a matter of how your league is set up as well. How many yards does it take for a QB to get a point? Do you get points for a completion and lose a point for an incompletion? How many points do you lose for interceptions?

As far as Jackson goes, for someone who’s infatuated with big names, it’s easy to stick with that person even if they aren’t producing.

Mind you, these are suggestions and I’m taking into account these players future match ups.

Standard FFL scoring is just that… standard… with moderate variation… and all stats are relative… If Garrard ranks 16 among QB scoring then he is only valuable in a league of 15 or more teams. Most leagues are 10-12 and if you can use Josh Freeman or Matt Cassel – who have better offenses and throw fewer INT then Garrard has about the same value as Ryan Fitzpatrick. I’m not saying you’re wrong per se to offer your opinion, I’m merely stating that offering someone the 16th-best player isn’t much of an offer.

Suggesting that Peyton Hillis – who ranks directly below Chris Johnson on the season – is a huge fantasy sleeper as a free agent or that Darren McFaddon is available in most leagues as a scoring machine or that Ladanian Thomlinson is more effective than Maurice Jones-Drew… those who be astute observations.
