Good time for Khabibulin to serve time

Why pay the price sitting at home, when you could pay your debt to society?

That’s a question Edmonton Oilers netminder Nikolai Khabibulin may be exploring this morning, after being placed on Injured Reserve, after suffering a groin injury during last night’s 5-0 home debacle vs. the Chicago Blackhawks.

With his club currently sitting in the cellar of the NHL’s standings, the timing may actually benefit the Oilers, if the veteran netminder can arrange to have his rehab time spent…behind bars.

The Bulin Wall was found guilty earlier this year by an Arizona court, of DUI and speeding charges, and is expected to serve time sometime in the near future. It might make sense for Khabibulin and his lawyer to try and expedite serving his debt to society, if he’s able to maintain his rehab regimen behind bars.

Given the state of the Oilers, a team that looks better poised to grab a second consecutive top draft pick rather than a playoff spot, when Khabibulin serves his time may quickly become a redundant question anyway.

Oilers’ GM Steve Tambellini has since summoned veteran goaltender Martin Gerber from the team’s Oklahoma City AHL team, where he posted a solid 9-4-0 record with a 2.56 GAA and a .911 SV%. He will share net-minding duties with Devan Dubnyk, who replaced Khabibulin for the third period of last night’s game, which saw masses of fans exiting the building with 10 minutes remaining.

Prior to his most recent injury, Khabibulin posted an unimpressive 4-10-1 record with a 4.07 GAA and a .879 SV%, on a team that has yet to find its defensive footing.

In the meantime Oiler fans, chins up….sticks down.
