Iowa State really has the odd stack up against them now for a chance to become bowl eligible. they have to win saturday against Missouri, who has only two losses on the season. Iowa State has to go without their starter senior quarterback, Austen Arnaud for the rest of the season due to a knee injury. In order for the Cyclones to win this game they have to heavily rely on their defense and running game, which the trend for the year has been if both those factors are working they win. But the problem with loosing Arnaud is that the Missouri defense will be ready to shutdown running back Alexander Robinson and the running game.
The Cyclone defense has a tough task this week against Missouri because they use two quarterbacks, their freshman QB James Franklin on a few running downs. But QB Blaine Gabbert has been taking off in the open field, in the Kansas State game, whenever Kansas State dropped eight players into man coverage, which left the middle of the field wide open. Gabbert ended the game with 89 yards on 14 carries, and should be more of a running threat.
This week is due or die for Iowa State, this is their last game for the regular season, because they have a bye next week. So they have sit and wait about their feature next week. But they have to beat the tigers Saturday to even have the uncertain outcome of the rest of their season. If they don’t win Saturday, the Cyclones are done and they have to regroup and start thinking about next season. I hope that is not the case but they have to pull out an upset, we shall see.
