New coach, same result for struggling Islanders

While there was a new man behind the bench Wednesday evening, the results were the same for the struggling New York Islanders.
New Islanders head coach Jack Capuano saw some effort from his team, but the end result was a 4-2 loss to the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning, sending the Islanders (4-11-3) to an 0-10-1 mark in their last 11 games. Capuano was coaching his first game after the Monday firing of coach Scott Gordon.
“We did a good job in a lot of areas,” Capuano said afterwards. “I just wanted them to be loose and have a little bit of fun. They have been through a lot, and I think it grows on you mentally.”
Ironically, New York’s last win had come against Tampa Bay in Florida last month, a 3-2 OT victory.
On this night, the Islanders (36 shots, 0-for-4 on power play) got goals from Matt Moulson and John Tavares, but it was to no avail. A number of badly timed penalties would eventually doom the Islanders to the loss and the lowest point total (11) in the NHL at this time.
While no one is expecting Capuano to turn this organization around overnight, it is safe to say that Islanders faithful do not want to jockey with old rival Edmonton for the worst record in the NHL all season.
Perhaps with some new blood behind the bench and a new attitude, the Islanders, who next host Florida on Saturday, can right the ship before it goes down.
Then again, it took the Titanic some time to sink.
