Well I realize i’m a little late seeing that the season has already started, the Huskies are 2 games into their season. They are 2-0, since this is my first post about them we’re going to discuss their chances in the Big East this season as well as how they ‘ve been playing. Uconn has beat Stony Brook and Vermont, the first game was a good team effort and the 2nd game was all Kemba Walker. Walker finished with 42 points and 8 rebounds, Walker single handedly willed Uconn to victory!! Hopefully that is not something he will HAVE to do routinely this year.
The 2010 Uconn Huskies are much different than the Huskies “traditional” teams of the past. Usually when you think Uconn Basketball, you think size, athleticism, defense, pace, and lack of perimeter shooters. This is not your usual Uconn team, they lack most of the size they are known for and have more perimeter shooters than they have had in the past. Outside of Kemba Walker, most would have a hard time naming Uconn’s starting 5. Kemba is the best player on this team, in fact I have no issue saying that this is “Kemba’s” team! Kemba’s supporting cast is not lacking in the talent department, they are however lacking in the experience department. Jim Calhoun is relying heavily on his most recent freshman class, Calhoun has used a 10 man rotation in the 2 games played this season. There are 6 freshman on this year’s team not counting Ench Wolf who is supposed to be eligible mid-season, of those freshman 5 of them are in that 10 man rotation. Unfortunately the Big East is not a conference where youth bodes well, teams in the Big East must be experienced and mentally tough. Both of those qualities are not prevalent on a roster full of freshman, Kemba Walker and Alex Oriaki have a lot of responsibility placed on them. Kemba as the floor general and overall leader, while Oriaki is the only experienced post player as a sophmore.
The Big East as always will be a tough league again this year, in the preseason rankings as far as the Big East Conference Uconn was ranked 10th. Villanova,Syracuse, Pitt, and Georgetown will all be contenders in the Big East because of their experience. Syracuse had a nice incoming class of freshman, but they will rely heavily on their returning players. Scoop Jardine, Kris Joseph, and Brandon Trische. Georgetown will rely heavily on Chris Wright and Austin Freeman. Pitt will continue to be powered by Brad Wanamaker and Ashton Gibbs. Villanova basketball is Corey Fisher, Corey Stokes, and coach Jay Wright. I don’t think Uconn will finished 10th because I have great faith in Jim Calhoun’s ability to “coach up” his players, they will struggle against those teams mentioned above though. Where do you think the Huskies will finish in the Big East this year? Do you think they will end the season ranked in the AP poll??
