Flames Drop A Heartbreaker

After coming off a toss loss to the Phoenix Coyotes the Calgary Flames told captain Jarome Iginla that he would not be moved. Apparently that’s all Jarome needed to wake up as he potted a hat trick against the Chicago Black Hawks in a seven goal Flames outburst. Taking us to Detroit and game one of a tough five game in seven night road trip.

The captain once again showed up with what looks like more energy scoring twice and adding an assist but the story of this game was told in two ways. The Flames had a terrible lack of discipline and also got hung with two terrible calls in the third period, and the fact that the Flames blew a 4-2 lead, and that part I have to wonder what the message was from the coaching staff.

Up 4-2 with ten minutes left the Flames drew a four minute power play and went into the prevent defense!?!? Then Nik Hagman got called on one of the weakest slashing penalties I’ve ever seen. Making it 4 on 4 and of course the Wings scored to get the game within one. Then after another weak call against Jay Bouwmeester the Red Wings managed to tie the game up with three seconds left to play.

On to overtime and you knew it was just a matter of time until the Red Wings won the game and of course Nicklas Lidstrom who by the way looks like he could play until he is 50 if he really wanted to scored in OT to send Calgary away with only one point.

Now the Flames need to suck it up for a game tonight in New York against the Rangers. I would suspect that Henrik Karlsson will get the start. Lets see if the Flames can show some mental toughness and continue their roll offensively. If they do they can still have a successful road trip. And the Calgary Flames need a big road trip. If they falter in these next four games they could be too far back even at this early point of the season to get back into playoff contention.

Have a good one!
