Morandini, Sandberg among Phils Minor League Staff

The Phillies on Monday continued to hire former players for their development staff, adding Mickey Morandini as the manager for single-A Williamsport Crosscutters.

[1]Morandini was selected by the Phillies in the fifth round of the 1988 draft and has spent the last two summers as a guest instructor during Phillies spring training. In 11 major league seasons — close to nine with the Phillies — he hit .268 with 32 home runs, 351 RBI and 123 stolen bases in 1,298 games. Morandini also played for the Cubs and Blue Jays as well as the 1993 National League Champion Phillies.

[2]Last week, the Phillies hired Ryne Sandberg to manage the triple-A Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Sal Rende and Rod Nichols, who have long coached in the Phillies organization, will join his staff.

[3]Mark Parent will manage the double-A Reading Phillies. Parent led single-A Lakewood to the South Atlantic League Championship in 2010. Frank Cacciatore and Bob Milacki will remain on the Reading staff.

Dusty Wathan will return for a second year with single-A Clearwater. Wathan has spent the last five years in the Phillies’ minor league system as both a player and coach. Dave Lundquist will return as pitching coach.

Lakewood will be helmed by Chris Truby, who was Williamsport’s manager last year, his second season as part of the Phillies’ minor league staff. Returning coaches Greg Legg and Steve Schrenk will comprise his staff.

Roly DeArmas will manage the rookie-level Gulf Coast Phillies. DeArmas has spent 32 of his 39 seasons of professional baseball with the Phillies organization. Kevin Jordan and Les Lancaster will make his coaching staff.

Some positions have yet to be filled. Rumors that Jamie Moyer would sign on as minor league pitching coach were squashed when Moyer, , opted to become a free agent.  Former Phillies hitting coach Milt Thompson may still be reassigned within the organization. Juan Samuel was hired by the mjor league Phils to become the new third base coach, relocating Sam Perlozzo to first base. It is still possible that Larry Bowa could be hired onto the staff, which would move Samuel to first and Perlozzo to the bench. For now, but the minor league staff looks like this:
