As ‘Favre’ as it should go

Should the soap opera in Minnesota continue with Brett Favre as lead actor?

It’s irrational, self-absorbed and utterly upsetting, even for the fans sake, to keep Favre under center for the remainder of the season. In Sunday’s 31-3 laugher against rival Green Bay one bright spot was that wide receiver Sidney Rice was activated off the PUP (physically unable to perform) list and led the Vikings with 56 receiving yards, while on the other side of things, Adrian Peterson — considered at the top of the NFL’s elite backs — has now had three sub 100-yard performances.

It’s very simple: the Vikings will not make the playoffs in 2010, so why not aim at developing a stronger sense of continuity between the expected-starter after Favre retires, Tarvaris Jackson with the rest of the team?

Look at the offensive comparisons from ’09 (left) to ’10 (right) Vikings through 10 games:

Points per game                               30.6                 17.2

Rushing yards per game                    126.2               118.5

Passing yards per game                      249.1               218.3

Giveaways                                          10                    25

3rd Down Percentage                         46.4                 35.5

It doesn’t take an expert to understand that, even with the recently-fired Brad Childress having “absolutely no people skills,” according to one unnamed player on the team, Favre IS the cancer on this team. Childress just happen to take the fall.

Amidst the record breaking performances for 20 years as one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks, when will enough be enough?

Here’s the recap for how Week 11’s projections went:
