The Miami Heat have lost back-to-back games against inferior teams.  They lost a close game on Saturday night to the Memphis Grizzlies.  Last night against the Indiana Pacers, Miami was blown out at home.  Both of these were very bad losses, but neither compares to losing forward Udonis Haslem to a torn foot tendon during that Memphis game.

Size and physical play down low has been one of the Heat’s most glaring weaknesses.  This is no secret.  It’s also no secret to anyone in and around Miami, just how important UD is to this team.  He is in many ways, this teams version of Dennis Rodman, although not as intimidating, but also much better offensively.  He has been here just as long as Dwyane Wade and D3 will be the first guy to tell you about how Haslem is the heart, soul and glue of the Heat.  Now Udonis will be out until sometime around March.  As improbable as it sounds, the Heat will be hurt by this injury worse than if Wade or LeBron were to go down.  Those two guys both do a lot of the same things, but nobody on the Miami roster seems capable of picking up the slack with UD out.

Worry not Heat fans, Eric Dampier is coming to the rescue.  News out of Miami this morning is that the team will waive Jerry Stackhouse and sign Eric Dampier.  While there is some sarcasm dripping off the “rescue” statement, Miami has to make this move.  While I think a 75 year old Alonzo Mourning is probably better than Dampier, the Heat has to find some size somewhere.  Hell, if I was six inches taller I would go knock on Pat Riley’s door.

Now as far as winning games, Miami needs more than a journeyman forward.  They have got to start taking advantage of their athleticism and run more.  The Heat has looked great at times this year when they push the ball and get out in transition.  Wade, James and Bosh are all quicker than 95% of the guys covering them.  This team smoked Orlando and got dominated by Indiana.  C’mon man.  The ongoing chemistry experiment continues Wednesday night on the road against the Magic.
