Lets start with a heart breaker of a game last night for the Calgary Flames. A 2-1 loss in which Calgary outplayed the New York Rangers for the last 50 minutes of the game yet the Flames could not finish great chances, Marty Biron played well, and a bone headed line change by Anton Babchuk all added up into another Flames loss.
The bottom line is the Flames are falling further from the pack in the playoff hunt. granted there are 62 games left and Calgary will likely need around 78 points out of those games to be a serious playoff contender. That’s a tall order for this team. Which brings us to the future of the Flames.
I of course hold out hope the Flames will tear off a 7 game winning streak. And the biggest problem the management faces is that the Flames have the potential to do just that. and it has to be tough to decide that you are done when you have that ability.
The rumors of Robyn Regher to Montreal or Long Island have been whispered of course. Not to mention the Iginla rumors which brings me to the captain. It’s time to start taking a serious look at moving the captain if you are going to move a Regher. Plain and simply if you are going to trade away the core then trade away the whole core and rebuild around guys like Bourque, Backlund, Giordano, and Kiprusoff.
So Jarome this brings me to you. Ask for a deal! Not publicly so that the Flames can say it was their idea to move you and maintain your legacy in the city. You can’t honestly think this team is winning a cup anytime soon, and I understand that you want to be part of the solution in Calgary. Unfortunately with the way management has drafted and traded in the past decade it won’t happen soon. The Flames will be helped the most by you moving on to another team just like when Joe Nieuwendyk was traded for some kid named Iginla that no one knew about.
I’m begging you Jarome. It will hurt everyone but if you want to help the Flames then fall on the sword for the team. Nothing says you can’t re sign here when the current contract is up. Maybe Calgary will be in a better position then to take a run at the cup you want.
side note: Mark Staal will not be suspended for his hit on Matt Stajan. My personal feelings are mixed. It was a head shot, but Matt has to know better than admiring his pass right in the railroad tracks. I thought Staal might get one game for the head shot aspect. But not surprised he was not suspended either.
Have a good one!
