BRADFORD, Ark. —- Well Uncle Mel passed through a lot of woods and cross many bridges that cross rivers and wetlands and just like Eastern Michigan University football coach Ron English who is feeling thankful at this time of the year – just feels good!
Eastern Michigan University kicked off the holiday season off on the right foot by securing the second win of the season a 21-17, victoryagainst Mid-American Conference opponent from the East Division the University at Buffalo.
English felt good after the game as he was walking off from the turf of the canyon-like UB Stadium, he smiled and wave to the sparse supporters from Ypsilanti that made the trip across the country of Canada and the province of Ontario.
The Eagles’ game plan for the offense work well against the Bulls and English is giving thanks because, the Eagles defense finally showed up and played a strong and spirited game and they did just enough to get the job complete.
Contributing and having a good day against the Bulls, Eagles senior tailback Dwayne Priest who finished the game having a career rushing day. Priest ran for 171 yards and his effort took some of the responsibility off of quarterback Alex Gillett.
“It is about time,” English said about Priest after the game. “I am happy for him, he is a good kid, he is been nicked up since the second game of the season.”
What took Uncle Mel a few minutes to adjust too not only the satellite but witnessing a real honest strong effort from the 11 men that line up and play defense for the Eagles.
Nieces and nephews it was like finding $20 in the washing mechine - unexpected!
The defense did not let the Bulls offense make any big plays for big yardage they kept Buffalo football coach Jeff Quinn pacing up and down the sideline asking to any assistant who was standing near him where did this defense come from?
The Eagle defensive line made the pocket seemed like a pleat because all afternoon there was plenty of pressure surrounding Bulls quarterbacks Jerry Davis.
When the Davis handed the ball off to a running back the Eagles linebackers made certain to be in the proper place and deliver the right amount of punishment.
Even the toast brigade also known as the defensive backs made plays and supported the linebackers – it was a total refreshing effort by the defense.
Now the focus for the Eagles is getting ready for the odd-on-favorite by the Mid-American Media Association to win the Mid-American Conference Northern Illinois University Friday afternoon at the cozy home of the Eagles Rynearson Stadium.
The Eagles will be facing another team that will be ready to run the ball but the defense for the Huskies is a well-tested group and will give Eastern Michigan offensive line a tough contest.
Priest and Gillett is a nice combination running the option style offense but Gillett has also rediscovered the reliable hands of tight end Ben Thayer.
Thayer made some key plays that made first downs and kept the Eagles offense on the field,
Well friends there just might be a lot good seat available for the game against the Huskies because most of the students will be home enjoying left over pumpkin pie and turkey sandwiches and putting there feet up and resting after getting up before the crack of dawn for shopping for bargains to slip under the Christmas tree.
Thanksgiving Day English will take an extra minute setting around his diner table and offer a silence thank you in reverence for making strides toward reaching his goal at Eastern Michigan University.
Now all you nieces and nephews, Uncle Mel would like to say be careful and thank you for being there for your old Uncle – Happy Thanksgiving to y’all!
