Thanksgiving Edition: Turkey, Pie and Sports

If you ask 10 different people what their favorite holiday is, you’re sure to get a variety of different answers. If you ask a young kid their favorite, they may say Christmas because of the presents. Ask a newlywed couple, they will say Valentines to celebrate their love. If you ask a Football fan however, they are more than likely to say Thanksgiving because of the non-stop Football action. Thanksgiving is my personal favorite and not just because of the Football, though that is an added bonus. You have the Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, Cranberries and maybe most importantly, the Pie. Now I don’t like to boast, but when my family gets together, I’m not sure there is a greater meal cooked in the world. What I enjoy most however is the time we get to spend together and talk about life, work and my favorite topic, sports.
So as you get ready to enjoy your holiday with your loved ones, be thankful that you are able to experience the time you have with them. Also, be thankful that you are from Pittsburgh or are a Pittsburgh fan when it comes to sports. Believe it or not, we have it better than most cities do.
Steeler’s Fans: Even if you feel the league is targeting the Steelers, you’re still 7-3. Enjoy that they are able to overcome adversity with the penalties and injuries. Does the team have some concerns? Yes, but be thankful they are where they are right now. Most of all, appreciate that you have the best owners in not only Football, but ALL of professional sports running the organization in the Rooney’s. You have 6 Super Bowl rings which no other team can even come up with an argument that they are the best team to ever play the game during the Super Bowl era.
Penguin’s Fans: Realize the talent that is on the team in front of you right now. Be thankful that you have 2 of the best players in the entire world on your roster. Appreciate the Goaltender that you have in net because even though he gets the flack that he does, they wouldn’t even come close to being the same franchise without him. Most importantly, be thankful for Mario Lemieux for even giving us the privilege of having a professional hockey team in Pittsburgh because without him, they would be playing in Kansas City right now. After the glory years of Lemiuex, Jagr, Francis and Barrasso came and went, fans didn’t care about hockey anymore and the Penguins would practically give tickets away. Enjoy the Crosby and Malkin era while it is here and even if they reach the dark years again, don’t turn your back on the franchise.
Pirate’s Fans: We all know there isn’t much to be thankful about. But where would this City be without this team? It’s a cheap ticket and you get to watch the best players in the world compete every night even if ours are inferior. Enjoy the beauty of PNC Park and don’t take for granted the beautiful skyline in the back drop. Be thankful that we have a manager that wants to win and has been in this situation before. Lastly, appreciate the tradition that is the Pittsburgh Pirates and as hard as it is to believe, they will rise to the top again.
Panther’s Basketball Fans: Be thankful that Jamie Dixon is in town and for the state of New York and New Jersey for supplying us with great talent over all of these years. The Panthers are the best bargain for your buck by seeing them play at the Peterson Events Center with an astonishing 135-11 record since it debuted in 2002. Though the Panthers haven’t won the National Title in a long time, be thankful for the consistent seasons that Pitt always has year in and year out.
Panther’s Football Fans: Be thankful for the history that surrounds their program. Just like it’s hard court counter parts, thank the state of New Jersey for bringing their crop of talent to the Steel City. Enjoy the competitive product that has taken the field each week. Most importantly, give gratitude to the Big East Conference having an automatic BCS Bowl Bid through 2013 and for the rest of the conference for being so bad.
Pittsburgh Fans: Be thankful for the City that you cheer and the City that you call your own. Not many cities in the United States can say they have the success that Pittsburgh has in the past or present. How would you like to be a City like Utah that has the Jazz and the Utes? So whatever sport you choose to cheer, appreciate the Black and Gold and Blue and Gold that go out each week to compete for us, the fans.
