At this point last year the Buffalo Bills were 3-7. They are 2-8 now and although this is a worse record, there are many factors why they are a much better team this year. It may be a little absurd to compare these 2 teams but looking to next year I feel it’s important to make these comparisons in hope we keep this core of players together.
Quarterback: Trent Edwards vs Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick is the clear winner, he is playing with confidence and is able to bounce back from a poor performance or from throwing interceptions. Although our offensive line is not as strong as it should be, Fitzpatrick has only been sacked 14 times, which tells me that he has the ability to scramble which Trent was lacking. He has also passed for over 300 yards in 2 games which Edwards failed to do during his stint in Buffalo.
Running back: Marshawn Lynch vs Fred Jackson. For the last 2 years Fred Jackson has been the Bills shining star on offense. For a undrafted player from Coe College, Jackson demonstrates what hard works get you! Jackson goes out every week does the best he can on every play, never quits and at times looks like he can carry everyone on his back for that extra yard. If the Bills have a healthy C.J. Spiller next year, combined with Jackson this will be a very dangerous combo.
Wide Receivers: Terrell Owens vs Bills Receivers. The reason I didn’t put one player to go up against T.O. was because he plays for himself and not for his team. Players like Evans, Parrish and Johnson have work ethics that are exemplary; you never see these guys show boat after a big play or a first down, they put the ball down and get back to the line of scrimmage for the next play. Not sure what Owens would have done if he had had Fitzpatrick all season in 2009, but I’m sure he would have complained about something.
Defense: 2009 vs 2010. As of now 2010 wins. I had a quick look at the points given up throughout 10 games last year and the Bills lost 7 games by a combined 110 points compared to this years 83pts in 8 losses. Fans can only hope that the defense will stay healthy next year and steal a couple of games.
Special Teams: 2009 vs 2010. Tie. The special teams have been solid the last few years and with the addition of Spiller they will only be stronger next year. Hate to say it but perhaps it’s time to get a new kicker. Sorry Lindell.
The Bills face the Steelers this Sunday at a sold out Ralph Wilson stadium and look to add to their win total. My only hope is that they finish the season on an upswing, which they haven’t been able to do in over a decade.
Congrats goes out to Drayton Florence for winning AFC defensive player of the week! Hopefully this ends the Bills dry streak, since the last time a Bills player was awarded this was in 2007.
Take Buffalo in the upset of the week 21-20 over Pittsburgh
