NFC West Showdown will be a slow night for MNF

When the schedule makers had the week 12 Monday nighter see the San Francisco 49ers travel to Arizona to face the Cardinals, I’m sure they were expecting a battle for the NFC West lead as teams gear up for the playoffs.

Instead, they will have the 3rd and 4th place team face each other as people get over their turkey hangover.

To say that either teams’ season has been a disappointment is an understatement.  The Cardinal’s are the defending NFC West champions, and the 49ers had expectations to take that title away.

Now both teams are just playing for pride.  Both teams rank in the bottom half of the league in pretty much every meaningful statistic.

The 49ers have yet to win on the road this year, so there is a chance they may get their first road win of the season in Arizona, but don’t take that to the bank.  This is the team that gave the Carolina Panthers their only win of the season.

I’m not going to look into the stats or the game or list keys to victory.  This game will determine one thing and one thing only… whether the 49ers are a team that has given up on the season or a team that has given up on their coach.  While mathematically the 49ers still have a chance to make the playoffs (thanks to the schedulers making the schedules divisional game heavy at the end), reality says that this won’t happen.

What I want to see, and hope to see on Monday night is a team that shows they still give a damn.  That this team of professionals, while deeply disappointed that their season did not go the way they expected, won’t act like a child who didn’t get dessert.
