Tough Semi-Final Sees Hokies Go Through To Finals

It was not pretty. It was not good. It was, however, a win. Virginia Tech beat the Oklahoma State Cowboys 56-51. The Hokies won their second game in the 76 Classic in Anaheim to send them to the championship game. Malcolm Delaney looked to be held up the whole game, and when Oklahoma State switched to the pressure zone, the Hokies found little offense. They did not score for seven of the final eight minutes in the first half. Virginia Tech’s defense also looked very strong, and they forced 16 OK State turnovers. With last nights injury to Erick Green, the performance of Freshman Tyrone Garland was just what the Hokies needed. He added six points in eight minutes, and seemed to alleviate some of the pressure that OK State had been applying. The Hokies also saw the return of Cadarian Raines, who sat out the end of last season, as well as the beginning of this season with an injury. Victor Davila seemed to break out of an early season slump, and finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Malcolm Delaney, despite being guarded heavily the whole game, had sixteen points, and was 10/11 from the FT line. The Hokies still seem to be playing without the grittiness they showed last season. It is still early, but March starts in November for the perennially left out Hokies, who look to make the big dance. With a win in the championship over the winner of Murray State and UNLV the Hokies will improve their chances in March.
