YPSLANTI, Mich. —- The thud that echoed across the Huron River Valley and shook the windows of downtown Ypsilanti was the curtain coming down and officially ending the 2010 Eastern Michigan University football season.
In front of 5,147 brave souls who came and sat in the friendly and cozy confines of the home of the Eagles, Rynearson Stadium and watch a defense become exposed like the bare hand with out a glove in the cold weather raw and painful; Northern Illinois University defeated the Eagles 71-3.
The Huskies offense basically did what ever they desired as running for 544 yards and Northern Illinois quarterback Chandler Harnish threw just 13 times and completed eight passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns and did not feel or see any resistance from the Eastern Michigan defense.
Leading the Huskies through the Eagle defense tailback Jordan Lynch carried the ball for 142 yards and scored on runs of 81 and 61 yards.
Feeling the heat to keep up with the pace set by Lynch, DeMarcus Grady also scored twice against the Eagles with a run of 60 yards and another touchdown run of 30 yards.
Not wanting to feel left looking like a tailback who could not contribute Chad Spann chipped in with a 71 yard sprint to the end zone.
Before the brave Eagle fans that finished their leftovers and Black Friday shopping could get the aluminum seats warm the Eagles were down by 20 points and the game spun out of control and crashed and burned like the marshmallow topping on the sweet potatoes left in the oven too long – unshakable.
Eastern Michigan University offense could only get a 27 yard field goal at the 12:55 mark of the second quarter by place kicker Sean Graham.
The entire offense for the Eagles could only gain 160 yards of total offense, the ran 64 plays from the line of scrimmage for an average of just a poultry 2.5 yards comparing that with the Huskies who averaged 15 yards.
Something or somebody just did not show up for this game that closed the football careers of 14 seniors that wanted to change the atmosphere in the locker room according to Eastern Michigan University football coach Ron English.
“You have to compete before you can win,” English said before Friday afternoon’s game the game. “I think we have been competitive a lot this year. I think we have just got to detail it out to win games.”
The defense again allowed too many big plays by being out of position and forgetting assignments which has became a common theme for the Eastern Michigan defense.
English will be busy this off season beginning Saturday afternoon reviewing and evaluating the season, players and coaches looking for answers that have plagued this team for more than a decade.
“Anytime you are a coach it is no different than when I first got here and you go into a new program it takes awhile to get what you want philosophy-wise and those kind of things,” Northern Illinois University Jerry Kill said comparing his start with Huskies and English. “I know him personality and I respect him very much!”
It did not take long for the seats to become empty as the wind howl across the turf of Rynearson Stadium and the gray overcast became steel gray and the end of the season finally arrived.
