USF Beats The U

South Florida ( 7-4)  pulls off the upset at Miami ( 7-5)  with a 23-20 win in overtime. Demetris Murray’s second touchdown of the game was the difference.  With this win against Miami, the Bulls remain perfect in overtime, they are now 9-0 in the extra session. Two of those nine wins in overtime have happened twice in the last three weeks.  South Florida has really grown up in the month of November this year, unlike the last two years.  South Florida this month has as many wins of three points or fewer, as many as they’ve totaled in the previous five seasons since joining the Big East in 2005.  With this loss today, Miami had their worst home record since 1997, the Canes went 3-3 at home this year.   Some believe with this loss today, this could spell the end for head coach Randy Shannon.

In the last 15 months, the Bulls have won on the road at Tallahassee against Florida State and now in Miami against the Hurricanes. A year ago, Miami crushed South Florida in Tampa 31-10, what a difference a year makes. The Bulls pulled off the upset today with an 18 year old true freshmen walk- on quarterback named Bobby Eveld ( 8/15  120 yards– all in the second half )  playing in place of injured quarterback B.J. Daniels who had a rough first-half.

After the Bulls took a 10-0 lead in the third quarter, Miami’s quarterback Jacory Harris ( who was out with a concussion and missed the last three games )  came off the bench and replaced freshman Stephen Morris who was pulled because of ineffective play. Harris lead Miami to 17 straight points and the heavily favored Hurricanes looked like they were going to hold off the upstart Bulls. Trailing by seven points with just under 5:00 minutes left in regulation. South Florida went 81 yards, with Eveld finishing the tying drive with a quarterback keeper.

Quick Number: Mo Plancher 24 carries with 103 tough yards today against Miami.  Second time Plancher has rushed for over 100 yards this season.

Next Game: Next Saturday at home against UConn. Who will start at quarterback for the Bulls?
