Als Win! 21-18

Well it was a close game. But honestly I didn’t think it was overly compelling. At the end of the day the Montreal Alouettes earned back to back Grey Cup victories over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The city of Edmonton did a fine job hosting the 98th version of the Grey Cup game, and sold out Commonwealth Stadium before the season even began!

It’s really too bad that the fans got treated to a bit of a stinker of a game, while the score says the game was close and it was, it really was two teams playing not to lose in this game. Without a couple of great catches by eventual Grey Cup MVP Jamel Richardson I don’t know if there would have been too much in this game that someone could say was a memorable moment unless of course you had a rooting interest in one of the two teams.

I felt watching the game that Montreal was mostly in control for the entire game and if their kicker David Duval could make a clutch kick this game would have never been that close. Duval was 2 of 4 and missed a couple of great chances that would have put the game out of reach.

My biggest disappointment in the entire game was the lackluster play of Saskatchewan QB Darian Durant. While Durant’s numbers weren’t terrible going 18/31 215 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT he never tried to make the big play with his legs to keep the Als defense conscious of the possibility of him taking off, which is one of his stronger attributes. Durant ended with one carry for eight yards. And of course the interception he threw at the end of the game was brutal. No other word for it other than brutal. I could not believe he didn’t take the sac and instead threw up a wounded duck that had no opportunity to be anything but an interception to finally end the hopes of the green Riders.

Hopefully next year we get a championship game in which the teams try to win as opposed to trying not to lose!

Have a good one!
